PARIS: Thousands of supporters of an Iranian opposition group called on the European Union and the United States to remove the organization from terror blacklists at a large weekend rally outside Paris.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran - an umbrella group based in Paris that includes the blacklisted People's Mujahedeen, or PMOI [MEK] - held the rally at an exhibition center in the northern suburb of Villepinte just days after Britain removed the group from its list of banned terrorist organizations.

PARIS (AFP) More than 70,000 supporters of Iran's opposition protested near Paris on Saturday, urging the international community to remove bans on the country's armed opposition group, organisers said.

The protest came just days after Britain's decision to lift its ban on the People's Mojehedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI)[MEK], a move Iran denounced as a "disgrace".

Early this week, finally, the European Union (EU) adopted a new set of sanctions designed to discourage the Iranian regime’s drive to develop nuclear weapons.

These new measures include an asset freeze on Iran’s largest bank, Bank Melli, and other business and financial outfits affiliated with the nuclear and weapons programs. The European bloc is reportedly also studying sanctions against Iran's oil and gas sector, to be implemented in the next several months, and has published a blacklist of Iran’s nuclear experts and companies connected to these programs. The list includes 15 additional individuals and 20 companies.

PARIS (AP) — Thousands of supporters of an Iranian opposition group called on the European Union and the United States to remove the organization from terror blacklists at a massive rally Saturday outside Paris.

The Paris-based National Council Resistance of Iran [NCRI] — an umbrella group that includes the blacklisted People's Mujahedeen of Iran, or PMOI [MEK] — held the rally at an exhibition center in the northern Villepinte suburb just days after Britain removed PMOI [MEK]from its list of banned terror groups.

NCRI - The Brig. Gen. Ali Larijani, speaker of the clerical regime's Majlis (parliament) resorted today to blackmail and threats to counter the international community's demand to halt its uranium enrichment activities. Addressing the Western countries he said, "Do not seek to provoke Iran because you may get to a point of no return and lose your chance for negotiation. Your wrong strategies in Iraq, Lebanon and Afghanistan have caused nothing but hatred. With your double standards and deceptions, you are rapidly approaching a strategic deadlock in the region and the final whistle to a lost game is about to be blown."
