The Associated Press - As the Bush administration pushes to refer Iran
to the U.N. Security Council, many members of Congress are advocating
get-tough approaches and say military force should remain an option to
thwart Tehran's nuclear ambitions.
Lawmakers largely back the effort to haul Iran before the Security
Council over the Iranian government's refusal to give up its uranium
enrichment program. But some say they doubt that a simple reprimand
from the council — seen as a likely outcome — will be enough to
persuade Iran to change course.

Reuters - Foreign ministers of the five permanent U.N. Security Council
members and Germany will meet on Monday to bridge differences over
Iran's nuclear work before a crisis meeting of the U.N. nuclear
watchdog, diplomats said.
They said Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States and Germany
would strive in London for a consensus before the 35-nation board of
the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) holds an emergency
meeting on Iran in Vienna on February 2.
The United States and European Union allies want the IAEA to refer Iran
to the Security Council for possible sanctions. Russia and China are
urging caution, preferring something like an IAEA statement of concern
about Iran without a referral now.

Mullahs seek to delay referral to UN Security Council
NCRI - Ali Larijani, Secretary of the clerical regime’s Supreme
National Security Council, said in Moscow today that Tehran views the
Russian plan “positively,” in a devious bid by Tehran to obfuscate and
throw international efforts at referring its file to the UN Security
Council off track. He added that the plan should be completed in
negotiations in February and threatened that if Tehran’s file is
referred to the Security Council, it would scupper the Russian deal and
the clerical regime would resume full industrial-scale uranium
enrichment.

The Associated Press, BAGHDAD - British troops launched a crackdown
Tuesday on Basra's troubled police, arresting several officers in a
force long believed infiltrated by extremist Shiite militiamen with
ties to neighboring Iran. Curbing militia power is considered crucial
to building trust among Iraq's rival communities and establishing
government authority, but finding a way to do it has proven elusive.
