Azerbaijan: 15 convicted of treason passed secrets to Iran PDF Print E-mail

BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) - Security officials in Azerbaijan (ah-zur-by-JAHN' ) say 15 people convicted of treason there had spied for Iran against the U.S., Britain and Israel.

The National Security Ministry says the 15 provided Iranian intelligence with information on Western embassies, companies, pipeline operations and employees operating in the former Soviet republic.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards patrol Persian Gulf, U.S. says PDF Print E-mail

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps has taken command of Iranian naval operations in the Persian Gulf, the U.S. military has revealed.

That means U.S. naval forces are operating in the same waters as an organization the United States considers a major supporter of terrorist activity.

Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made the disclosure Wednesday at the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where he was answering questions from military students.

U.S. commander: Iran still supporting Iraqi militias PDF Print E-mail

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Shi'ite militias in volatile parts of Baghdad continue to receive support from Iran, a U.S. commander said on Monday, in contrast to U.S. officials who noted positive developments in Iran's role inside Iraq.

Army Col. Don Farris, commander of U.S. troops in the Sadr City and Adamiya areas of Baghdad, said the number of attacks in his sector had dropped 75 percent since May.

Prominent Iraqi tribal leader was killed in a terrorist attack by Qods Force PDF Print E-mail

NCRI - Sheikh Fayez Lafta Aliwi and three other tribal leaders from Al-Obeidi tribe were killed in a terrorist attack  by the armed militias affiliated to the Iranian Qods force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The assault had followed a mortar attack to Dujma region in Diyala province of Iraq on November 9.

The Multi-National Division - North Public Affairs Office stated in a press release issued after the attack: "Sheik Fayez of the Obeidi tribe, an influential leader in ongoing reconciliation efforts to further advance the safety and security of the Iraqi people in Diyala Province, was killed in an explosion inside his home, near the village of Khalis at approximately 6 p.m. Iraqi local time on November 9.

BAGHDAD, Nov 11 (Reuters) - The quantity of Iranian bomb-making components being found in Iraq is increasing despite a fall in attacks and 20 Iranian-trained agents are still operating south of Baghdad, a top U.S. general said on Sunday.

Extensive Iranian influence in Iraq remained evident, said Major-General Rick Lynch, despite signs of a possible easing of tensions between Washington and Tehran over security in Iraq.

The Sunday Times - An Iranian agent held by the Americans in Iraq is at the centre of attempts to get five British hostages freed, a senior Iraqi official claimed last week.

The five men - four bodyguards and an economics expert working for the US company BearingPoint - were kidnapped from the Iraqi finance ministry in May.
