Talks between the U.S. and Iran on Iraqi security came at a crucial
time for all parties involved. Right now, Baghdad is a bull's-eye in a
decisive competition for influence in the Near East . In our
increasingly globalizing world, the stakes are higher than ever. While
the United States is using talks to clarify necessary steps toward
sustainable peace in Iraq , Iran is using talks as a means to acquire
official legitimacy to sustain violence.

On July 29, in the midst of bombings, explosions and assassinations
throughout Iraq, the nation burst into a celebration of joy and
happiness that was unprecedented in the past four years. The Iraqi
national soccer team, for the first time in its history, had
magnificently won the Asian Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Iraqis from
all walks of life celebrated in the streets with elation. The team
triumphed over Saudi Arabia, which has produced the most wins in the
history of the championship. The joy and pride that Iraqis felt for
their team — and the makeup of the team itself — transcended all
sectarian lines.

The dynamics of the relation between the United States and the Iran's
mullahs resembles that of an abused wife and the batterer husband.
Domestic violence comes as a form of bullying, as a means that is
easier than other methods. There are different reasons why spouses stay
in physically abusive marriages. Some women stay because they fear the
community's reaction, some hope that their husbands will change, some
stay out of fear of the husband's violent reaction, some stay because
of low-esteem, and some stay because they can't find a way out. United
States must find a way out of this dishonorable cycle.

After a hiatus of 28 years, the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran finally held an openly acknowledged dialogue[1]. Actually to date there have been two such meetings, both held in Baghdad, (May 28, 2007 and July 24, 2007) and both specifically dealt with the security situation in Iraq, and were ostensibly limited to that subject alone. |

Source: The Hill During the Cold War, the free world was threatened by a nuclear-armed
state based on a radical, all-encompassing and discredited ideology, a
regime that projected an aggressive agenda of global domination even as
it struggled to keep its own dissatisfied citizens in line back home.
While America and her allies maintained a resolute posture of military
strength to keep Soviet expansionism in check, ultimately it was our
example of freedom that inspired the restive peoples living under the
Evil Empire to tear down the wall.

ON JUNE 30, 50,000 Iranian exiles gathered in Paris to show their
support for the Iranian resistance, a group that seeks to replace the
Islamic fundamentalist regime in Tehran with a secular democracy. Yes,
there is a long-standing, internationally supported Iranian resistance.
But most Americans, in spite of the White House's foreign policy focus
on democracy building, have never heard of it.

Once again, the United States (U.S.) is considering removal of the
State Sponsor of Terrorism designation from North Korea -- this in
response to reported progess in the long-running effort to get North
Korea to dismantle its nuclear weapons program. Three days of
negotiations ended on July 20, with no concrete timeline for North
Korea to complete a series of steps agreed upon in February 2007, but
the International Agency for Atomic Energy has confirmed that North
Korea closed five main nuclear facilities at Yongbyon.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari announced that a second round of
negotiations between the American and Iranian ambassadors to Iraq will
take place soon. This meeting is a follow-up to the talks held on May
28, an event that was widely billed as historic but produced no
reduction in the violence in Iraq. After those meetings, American
Ambassador Ryan Crocker said that further negotiations would depend on
whether Iran acted to fulfill its stated commitments to Iraq's
stability and security.

Ever since the rise to power of what is deemed to be conservative
religious leaders, the Islamic State of Iran has been faced with
several problems. Its ambition to develop its own nuclear energy, which
it claims is for peaceful use (the matter is still to be debated), is
simultaneously faced with external as well as internal pressures.
