Once again, the United States (U.S.) is considering removal of the
State Sponsor of Terrorism designation from North Korea -- this in
response to reported progess in the long-running effort to get North
Korea to dismantle its nuclear weapons program. Three days of
negotiations ended on July 20, with no concrete timeline for North
Korea to complete a series of steps agreed upon in February 2007, but
the International Agency for Atomic Energy has confirmed that North
Korea closed five main nuclear facilities at Yongbyon.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari announced that a second round of
negotiations between the American and Iranian ambassadors to Iraq will
take place soon. This meeting is a follow-up to the talks held on May
28, an event that was widely billed as historic but produced no
reduction in the violence in Iraq. After those meetings, American
Ambassador Ryan Crocker said that further negotiations would depend on
whether Iran acted to fulfill its stated commitments to Iraq's
stability and security.

Ever since the rise to power of what is deemed to be conservative
religious leaders, the Islamic State of Iran has been faced with
several problems. Its ambition to develop its own nuclear energy, which
it claims is for peaceful use (the matter is still to be debated), is
simultaneously faced with external as well as internal pressures.

Iran's broad and destructive activities in Iraq are bringing renewed
attention to the Iranian regime's longstanding role as the world's
leading state sponsor of terrorism. As it continues to fund Shi'ia
militias in Iraq and deliver weapons such as IEDs to the insurgency,
Tehran is also escalating its presence in the Middle East as part of
its goal to export Islamic fundamentalist rule throughout the Muslim
world.

Looking at the Middle East region and Islamic countries, we see that
the people in these countries suffer from a number of social, political
and economic problems. If we watch conscientiously, we must look for a
solution to all these problems. There is no doubt that international,
Islamic and Arab organizations such as United Nations, Islamic
conference and Arab societies are aware of these problems and seek
solutions. We also witness that some Arab countries pay special
attention to eradicate illiteracy, poverty and hunger.

Investor's Business Daily, July 10, 2007 - Iran's goal is to make the U.S. miserable, and it's all but openly
declared war against us. The country's leaders, led by Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad, have been implicated in the deaths of some 200 U.S.
troops. They've funded terrorist militia groups in Iraq, and trained
and aided Hezbollah and Hamas terrorists.

Engage Tehran. I have a piece of advice for those wishing to start a
ferocious and bloody war with Iran that would claim the lives of
millions of Iranian people and thousands of American soldiers, would
cost hundreds of billions of dollars, and would enflame turmoil in the
region for decades: engage Tehran. Here is a step by step instructional
guideline for engagement to proceed.

THE HARD-LINE regime of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been frightening neighbors with its meddling-by-proxy in Iraq, Lebanon, and Gaza. The regime's apparent pursuit of nuclear weapons has also prompted unusual solidarity among the United States, Europe, and Russia; together they have been ratcheting up United Nations Security Council sanctions on Iran, demanding that it suspend uranium enrichment and comply with its obligations to the International Atomic Energy Agency. But the most telling signs of trouble for the theocratic regime in Tehran are currently on display not in its external relations but in domestic turmoil. |
