In a letter to Mrs. Louise Arbour, United Nations High Commissioner for
Human Rights, Chairman of Foreign Affairs Committee of NCRI called for
condemnation of Iranian regime in the UN General Assembly and
appointment of a special representative to pursue human rights
violations in Iran
In a letter to Mrs. Louise Arbour, the United Nations High Commissioner
for Human Rights, Mr. Mohammad Mohaddessin, the Chairman of Foreign
Affairs Committee of National Council of Resistance of Iran conveyed
the concerns of the Iranian people and Resistance regarding increasing
executions in Iran, and requested that urgent measures be undertaken to
halt this tragic trend.
The letter stated: “Since January 2004, at least 100 prisoners have
been hanged in public. The Iranian Judiciary has sentenced scores more
to the death who are on death row.
Mr. Hojjat Zamani, a political prisoner, has been sentenced to four
executions and is waiting for the sentence to be carried out.
On July 31 and August 2, ten prisoners were sentenced to death in the
northeastern city of Mashad. On August 3, a young man was sentenced to
three executions in the northern city of Babol.”
The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of NCRI referred to
suppression of protest gatherings by teachers and students, and arrest
of at least 1,000 students in the weeks prior to the anniversary of the
July 1999 student uprising, and wrote: “Discussions between the
European Union and the Iranian regime have been a failure and reports
by human rights organizations reflect an alarming trend in the
situation of human rights in Iran.”
At the end of his letter, Mr. Mohaddessin called upon the High
Commissioner for Human Rights “to prepare the grounds for the
condemnation of the Iranian regime in the upcoming session of the
United Nations General Assembly for flagrant violations of human
rights” and “to appoint a special representative to pursue the human
rights situation in Iran.”
