Iran: Workers at Ahwaz Rolling and Pipe Mills Corporation (ARPCO) walked out PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 20 July 2008
ahwaz-rolling-and-pipeNCRI - The part-time workers of the ARPCO walked out over their unpaid salaries and other benefits. There are over 1000 part-time workers employed in the factory.

ARPCO founded in 1966, posses over 30 years of experience in steel industry. At the time being, on 900,000 square meters land, the factory is producing the highest quality hot rolled coil, black and galvanized E.I.W. and pipeline (API 5L) tubes.

However, according to labor activists, the non-elected management is refusing to honor the part-time workers' contract. Many of the workers have been employed by the ARPCO for two decades with renewable annual contracts.

"We fear that by the end of the current contract in three months, the management refuses to sign a new contact with us and it would be a disaster for our families," a labor activist said.

Khuzestan province has the largest workers' population in the country per capital. Haft-Tapeh Sugar Cane factory with over 5,000 workers has been shutdown over pay dispute between the management and labor force.
