Iraqi lawyers demand pursue Maliki for war crimes

Nouri al-Maliki
Leading Iraqi lawyers are taking action against prime minister Nouri al-Maliki for war crimes committed during his eight years ruling the strife-torn Middle Eastern state.

The President of the Iraqi Bar Association Ahmed al-Hamdani said the International Criminal Court in The Hague has received three judicial letters pressing charges against Maliki, and providing documents, eye-witness reports and video recordings of evidence of war crimes, violations of human rights, and the execution of prisoners and protesters in the cities of Fallujah, Hawija and Najaf, Iraqi TV al-Taqeer reported.

Mr al-Hamdani has also provided a letter from the families of 700 victims of aerial bombings demanding he face trial. The ICC has now tasked a special group to investigate the case with the group expected to hold a meeting in mid August, Mr al-Hamdani added.
