U.S. calls on Iranian regime to release U.S. citizens detained in Iran

Marking the third anniversary of the arrest of a U.S. citizen in Iran, the State Department called upon the clerical regime to release all Americans imprisoned in Iran.

The statement by the U.S. Department of State called on the Iranian regime ” to release Amir Hekmati, Saeed Abedini, and Jason Rezaian to their families and work cooperatively with us to find Robert Levinson and bring him home.”

“On September 26, Mr. Abedini will have been detained for two years in Iran, on charges related to his religious beliefs. Mrs. Abedini has spoken eloquently about the difficulties her family has faced during this challenging time.”

The agency also called for the release of Saeed Abedini, a Christian pastor arrested due to his religious beliefs.

Meanwhile Congressman Dan Kildee (D-Flint) says he’s talked with President Obama about Hekmati’s case as recently as two weeks ago. He wants the administration to pressure the Iranian rego,e to release Hekmati.

“The Iranian government, if they really seriously choose to try to join the global community, should see the release of Amir Hekmati, as a tangible demonstration of that,” says Kildee.
