Iran: Earthquake injures hundreds, destroys 70 percent of province – official

A powerful earthquake of 6.1 magnitude struck early Monday in Ilam province in western Iran. The earthquake has left hundreds injured and damaged 70 percent of the province, said a local official.

The head of the Crisis Management for the province told the state-run YJC news website: “The damages inflicted on the province are estimated to cover 70 percent” of the province.

Ahmad Karami said: According to the figures received, 200-300 have been injured and five people have suffered from serious injuries.

State television footage showed destroyed houses, buildings, and cars in the city. Water, electricity, and telephone lines in Abdanan, located in the province of Ilam, have been cut.

Mohammad Reza Morvarid, the local governor, said an unspecified number of people have been injured.

Another official told IRNA that authorities expected to find severe destruction in rural areas close to the epicenter.

It is a usual policy of the Iranian regime that tries to hide the true figures of casualties and the extent of damages caused by earthquakes.
