Diplomat: UN experts say Iran sends arms to Syria

UNITED NATIONS - An expert panel monitoring U.N. sanctions on Iran has reported that Syria continues to be the main destination of illicit Iranian weapons, a Security Council diplomat said Wednesday.

The diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity because the panel's report has not been released, said it identified three new illegal shipments, two involving Syria which was also the previous destination of a majority of Iranian arms shipments.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - April 20, 2012 -  A U.N. Security Council committee has expanded its Iran blacklist to include two Iranian individuals and one firm for attempting to skirt U.N. sanctions by shipping arms to Africa in 2010, the U.S. envoy to the United Nations said on Friday.
 
"The individuals listed today helped plan a weapons shipment - intercepted by Nigeria in 2010 - in violation of existing U.N. sanctions," U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice said in a statement.

"Both individuals and this company are tied to the Qods Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the group that directs Iranian support for terrorism and extremism worldwide," she said.

Council adopts restrictive measures following the foiled plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the US

Following the foiled plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the US, the Council today subjected five persons to EU restrictive measures aimed at combating terrorism.

This means that their financial assets in the EU will be frozen and that no funds may be made available to them. Member states will afford each other the widest possible assistance with respect to enquiries related to these individuals.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Friday, 14 October 2011, the Iran Policy Committee (IPC) held a press conference at the National Press Club. The goal was to reveal the scope of operation and involvement of the Iranian regime's Qods Force in international terrorism, particularly as this deadly force was involved in a foiled plot to assassinate Saudi Ambassador to the United States, Adel al-Jubeir.

The United States filed a criminal complaint of 11 October 2011 in the Southern District of New York that charges Mansour Arbabsiar, a 56-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen holding both Iranian and U.S. passports, and Gholam Shakuri, an Iran-based member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF). In October 2007, the U.S. Treasury Department designated the Qods Force for providing material support to the Taliban and other terrorist organizations.

Following to the disclosure of new details of activities by the terrorist Qods Force in Europe and United States, Mehr website affiliated with the MOIS, in an utterly bogus report wrote: "The co-culprit in the alleged assassination plot of the Saudi Ambassador, is one of the principal members of the PMOI that has travelled to various countries using Iranian passports and other fabricated identity documents."
