The Rt. Hon. Lord Renton QC:
It is quite clear that the threat posed by the present Iranian regime
continues to intensify and it must be dealt with. But the question is
how. That’s why this meeting is so important and why important
contributions are made to the discussion.
Over the past quarter of a century, the long suffering people of Iran
have endured immense hardship at the hands of their theocratic rulers.
They use inhumane punishments and they arrest and torture those who
disagree with them. They have made huge efforts to export their brand
of Islamic fundamentalism, and the terrorism associated with it, to
other countries. In particular, this applies to Iraq. It is the
intention of the Iranian regime to convert Iraq, forcibly, into the
second Islamic Republic of the world.
The solution to the threat posed by the Iranian regime’s brand of
Islamic fundamentalism, and in particular, their interference in Iraq,
does not lie with the West. The solution must come from tolerant and
progressive Muslims, who are devoted to freedom, a secular democracy,
respect for human rights and the rule of law, as well as constructive
relations with their neighbours and the international community.
That is why it is so important, at this time, that we fully support the
National Council of Resistance of Iran, and their efforts to bring
freedom and democracy to their people. They have a very important role
to play in the defeat of the Iranian regime and more importantly, the
restoration of peace and stability, not only in Iraq, but in the Middle
East as a whole and in the wider international community. The Iraqi
people’s widespread support for the Iranian resistance shows that they
have come to this realisation and it’s about time that western
governments and the European Union followed suit.
