The four-and-a-half-year-long process of relocating members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI or MEK) to countries of safety was successfully completed on September 9, 2016 when the last 280 Camp Liberty residents left Iraq for Albania.

The achievement is not without cost, however. The residents left Iraq dispossessed of both personal and collective property, and have had to met the costs of resettlement themselves.

STATEMENT BY SENATOR JOHN McCAIN ON SUCCESSFUL RELOCATION OF IRANIAN DISSIDENTS FROM CAMP LIBERTY

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) released the following statement today on the successful relocation of all Iranian dissidents residing in Camp Liberty, Iraq to Albania:

“In 2003, the United States made a commitment to protect thousands of members of the Iranian dissident organization, the Mujadedin-e Khalq (MEK), who agreed to surrender their weapons and came under our protection as a result. Today marks the culmination of that commitment with the safe and successful relocation of all Iranian dissidents residing in Camp Liberty, Iraq to Albania. This is a welcome and long overdue development.

The PMOI/MEK is a natural ally of those seeking civic freedom, human rights and democracy in Iran
