“Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian regime’s former president, was excluded from the list of candidates in the upcoming sham presidential elections. Anyone who is at all familiar with the Iranian political landscape knows that this was done on direct orders of the mullahs’ supreme leader Ali Khamenei.

This is tantamount to a new surgical operation within the mullahs’ religious fascism and clearly signals the terminal phase of the regime’s rule.

Ahmadinejad registered despite Khamenei’s outright public opposition. As such, his disqualification indicates a new escalation in the regime’s infighting, and indicates the extreme weakness of Khamenei and serious discord and schism within the regime, particularly within Khamenei’s faction.

Second, it is worth remembering that with the help of the Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), Khamenei engineered the 2005 and 2009 sham elections to appoint Ahmadinejad as the regime’s president and imposed him on other factions. It was Khamenei who had repeatedly said that he preferred Ahmadinejad to others, including Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the regime’s former number two.

In this respect what happened yesterday is highly indicative of the escalating factional feuding within the regime and the weak status of Khamenei within the regime, particularly within his own faction. ”
