NCRI – On Sunday, September 27, 2009, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of the Iranian regime acquired 50 percent of Iran’s Telecommunication Company’s shares after winning a sham bid worth $8 billion at Tehran’s stock exchange. The sale, which took place after an apparently open bid, rendered complete and official the IRGC’s control over the telephone and internet networks of the country. The main purpose of the move is to intensify suppression and terror, curb the nationwide uprising of the Iranian people and prevent people from having freedom of access to the internet.

In addition to the suppressive aspect of the transaction, grabbing hold of the Telecommunications Company, and intensification of eavesdropping and filtering, the IRGC is poised to pocket huge profits by having a majority stake at a company with 86 million subscribers to its landlines and cell phones. At the same time, it injects the treasury of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s bankrupt government with over $8 billion.

An hour before the deal, the clerical regime rejected another company offering to buy the Telecommunication Company’s shares, citing a lack of “security credentials,” and instead declared IRGC-affiliated companies winners of the bid.
