Crisis in Tehran and Mashhad

  • The situation in Borujerd and Khorramabad is dangerous. In Selseleh and Delfan, at least 100 have died. No permits to hire people for hospitals is issued. They hire nurses for only 89 days to not give them insurance coverage.

The Peoples’ Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK) announced this afternoon, June 29, 2020, that the number of fatalities in 341 Iranian cities has surged past 62,600. Some 4,785 have died in Khuzestan, 3,790 in Khorasan Razavi, 3,180 in Gilan, 2,295 in Lorestan, 1,990 in Alborz, 1,415 in Hamedan, 780 in Kerman, 585 in Bushehr, 559 in Zanjan, 540 in Qazvin, and 175 in South Khorasan.

The Health Ministry Spokesperson put the engineered death toll in the past 24 hours at 162, the highest since the beginning of the virus spread in Iran. She added, “We have had a significant rise in the number of those infected and hospitalized in Tehran Province, which is a cause for concern. Khuzestan, Kurdistan, West and East Azerbaijan, Hormozgan, Bushehr, Khorasan Razavi, and Kermanshah are red. Ilam, Lorestan, and Golestan have been issued warnings.”

Mohammad Reza Mahboobfar, a member of the National Coronavirus Task Force (NTTC), was quoted by Mehr news agency as saying on June 28, “Three out of ten people in Isfahan carry the virus. With Coronavirus spreading in the country, deaths are on the rise. I can dare say that two people die every 15 minutes (192 in 24 hours) because of this disease.”

In Tehran, Alireza Zali, head of the NCCT, told the state TV yesterday that 399 people had been admitted to the ordinary units and 122 to the Intensive Care Units in the past 24 hours. He said, “The figures in Tehran are changing worryingly…For the first time, the number of those hospitalized has surpassed the number of discharged patients.”

Nahid Khodakarami, head of the Tehran City Council’s Health Commission, was quoted by the Modara website yesterday, “Since the beginning of the Coronavirus outbreak, more than 5,000 Tehranis have lost their lives”. Earlier, on June 11, Zali had said, “The mortality rate in Tehran Province is much lower than in the rest of the country … The average age of mortality in Tehran is ten years older than the national average.”

In Lorestan, according to doctors, the situation in Borujerd and Khorramabad is dangerous. In Selseleh and Delfan counties, at least 100 people have died from Coronavirus, which is not counted in any statistics. At least 10 percent of nurses are infected with the virus. Soon, the medical staff will be out of the treatment chain. Hospitals are short of nurses. However, the regime does not give employment permits to hospitals, and they employ nurses as 89-day workers so as not to pay for their insurance. University of Medical Sciences’ presidents no longer have the money to provide masks and materials.

In Khorasan Razavi, the secretary of the Coronavirus working group at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences told IRNA today, “The situation in Mashhad has surpassed the red phase. The number of hospitalized patients in this university is more than 600, which is the highest during the Coronavirus outbreak … The daily number of hospitalized patients is reported to be between 120 to 150 people.” ISNA quoted a member of the faculty of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences as saying, “The situation in Mashhad has become similar to March, or even worse. Emergencies and hospital wards are full of Coronavirus patients, to the extent that most medical staff are infected. We are short of medical staff and under pressure.” According to Asr-e Iran, the head of the university’s public relations department said, “Last week, about 400 Coronavirus patients and about 500 suspected had referred to hospitals and testing laboratories daily.”

In South Khorasan, the director of the Department of Infectious Diseases of Birjand University of Medical Sciences, told ISNA news agency today, “The number of patients testing positive for COVID-19 in South Khorasan, especially in Birjand, has increased significantly. Two ICU ward allocated to Coronavirus patients are completed, and we are equipping the third ward. Two days ago, a new ICU ward was set up for patients at Vali-e-Asr Hospital, which is now full.”

In Khuzestan Province, the vice-president of Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences in Ahvaz was quoted by IRNA, today, as saying, “Khuzestan has been red since six weeks ago. Given the pressure on the health care system, restrictions must be imposed so that the health system can have a respite.” The president of Abadan University of Medical Sciences was also quoted by IRNA, today, as saying, “The situation in southwestern Khuzestan is such that if restrictions are not imposed in this area, the number of patients entering the region’s hospitals will be out of control.” In Dezful, at least 167 people have died of Coronavirus infection in the last eight days at Ganjavian Hospital, according to doctors. The death toll at the Hospital has risen to 624 since February 20.

In Hormozgan, the head of Bandar Abbas city council told ILNA news agency, yesterday, “People are dissatisfied with the decisions of the government … Bandar Abbas is still facing serious problems in providing medical personnel and equipment. Through its cover-up, the government has disregarded the rights of Bander Abbas for making public its information.”
