Assembly of Experts: Khomeini wrote Montazeri, “You will hand the country over to liberals and through them, to the Mojahedin”

Regime’s leaders admit to collaborating with and approving the 1988 massacre,
Claim they feared Khomeini’s image would be distorted and Mojahedin’s credibility enhanced in Iran and abroad

The Iranian Resistance’s President-elect Maryam Rajavi described the statement issued by the Assembly of Experts on the massacre of political prisoners in 1988 as an explicit, conclusive and official document specifying the acceptance and complicity of the regime’s present leaders in the massacre of 30,000 political prisoners, a crime against humanity.

The Assembly of Experts is the highest decision-making institution in the mullahs’ Vvelayat-e faqih regime.

The Assembly of Experts described the mass executions of political prisoners as “a historic and revolutionary decision by his highness Imam Khomeini”, and “a prompt decision” to “deal seriously and decisively with the Hypocrites (the Mojahedin-e Khalq [PMOI/MEK])”, indicative of Khomeini’s “profound and insightful understanding.”

The decree for the massacre of PMOI prisoners is so anti-Islamic and inhuman that the Assembly of Experts — comprised of the most criminal mullahs and a number of those directly responsible for the massacre — does not dare to reprint the decree itself. Instead, in a deceitful and outrageous maneuver, they describe the decree as Khomeini’s decision to have “fair trials for leaders and some members” of the PMOI.

The regime’s leaders express concern that the principle of velayat-e faqih would be undermined and Khomeini’s image distorted, while the Mojahedin would be “legitimized” and “an aura of (their) innocence created.”

It is not without reason that in recent days, Khamenei praised “the blessed and radiant image of the Imam (Khomeini)” and Rafsanjani defended the “Imam’s unprecedented role and prestige in contemporary history” vis-à-vis the massacre. Rouhani’s Minister of Interior, Mostafa Pour-mohammadi, also said, “We are proud to have carried out God’s commandment on the Hypocrites [PMOI/MEK].”

Mrs. Rajavi challenged the regime’s officials to publish in the media without censorship the text of Khomeini’s fatwa, the questions about it posed by Adulkarim Mousavi Ardebili then chief justice, and Khomeini’s response to him. She said the fataw is anti-Islamic and contradicts even the foundations of the mullahs’ own fundamentalist jurisprudence.

Maryam Rajavi urged the clergy and religious authorities in the Islamic world to condemn this criminal decree and spilling the bloold of 30,000 political prisoners.. Do not allow this atrocity, unprecedented in contemporary history, to be attributed to Islam and Muslims, she said.

Mrs. Rajavi added: The documents published recently, as well as the public admissions by the regime’s highest-ranking officials and institutions in recent days, have doubled the need for international prosecution of those responsible for this heinous crime. The United Nations is obligated to establish a committee to examine these confessions and record them as conclusive documentation of a crime, thus preparing the legal grounds for prosecution of the criminals ruling Iran.

She added: Now that the regime’s leaders have acknowledged to having committed the massacre, they have to announce the names of those killed, publish their last wills, and provide the locations of their graves, as well as the names of all members of the death commissions in various provinces.

The statement by the Assembly of Experts describes Khomeini’s fatwa as providing “fair trials of leaders and some members” of the Mojahedin, while Khomeini wrote in his evil decree: “Those who are in prisons throughout the country and remain steadfast in their support for the Hypocrites [PMOI/MEK] are waging war on God and are condemned to execution. … It is naive to show mercy to those who wage war on God … Those who are making the decisions must not hesitate, nor show any doubt or be concerned with details.”
In reply to questions from Mousavi Ardebili, Khomeini wrote: “In all the above cases, if the person at any stage or at any time maintains his [or her] support for the Hypocrites [PMOI/MEK], the sentence is execution. Annihilate the enemies of Islam immediately. As regards the cases, use whichever criterion that speeds up the implementation of the verdict.”
The statement of the Assembly of Experts includes a quotation from Khomeini’s letter to Montazeri on March 26, 1989, which exposes the key reason for the killings: “Since it has been made clear that after me (Khomeini), you (Montazeri) will hand over Iran to liberals and through them to the Hypocrites [PMOI/MEK], you have relinquished your competency and legitimacy for future leadership of the regime.”

Recently, Mehdi Khaz-Ali, an official of the presidential office under then-presidents Ali Khamenei and Rafsanjani, also revealed some aspects of the regime’s shocking crimes in the course of the 1988 massacre. Clarifying the reason for the massacre, he said: “The largest and most numerous group opposing the state was the People’s Mojahedin Organization, which effected a four-hour parade in Enqelab Avenue. This group could be annihilated only with authorization from the Imam (Khomeini)… The officials wanted to uproot this group while the Imam was still alive. They said that (the political prisoners) might join (the organization) once they were released, in which case we would be confronted by a large number of people, but if we executed them, the executions would terrify their families and no one would dare to join.

Prior to the Assembly of Experts’ statement, Ali Khamenei expressed concern in a meeting with the regime’s officials on August 24, 2016, that the audio recording of Mr. Montazeri’s meeting would “attempt to legitimize” and create “an aura of innocence” for the Mojahedin and distort “Khomeini’s image.”

On August 27, 2016, Rafsanjani also expressed regret over “a new wave of attacks directed against Khomeini,” saying: “This wave has inundated virtually all foreign opposition media, to the extent that the mayor of Paris recently held an exhibition which re-enacted the scenes of the executions in those days… The extent of support for the Mojahedin Organization at this time is supersizing and is a cause for reflection. ” He added, “The main objective of our international and domestic enemies is to take revenge on the unprecedented role and prestige of the Imam (Khomeini).”

Majid Ansari, Hassan Rouhani’s deputy on legal affairs, also said that in addition to distorting Khomeini’s image, “a sophisticated conspiracy is being concocted on the international level to present the People’s Mojahedin Organization as a legitimate, civilized organization.”
