Coronavirus Outbreak in Iran: MEK’s Revelation of 1,300 Death Toll Infuriates the Regime

The MEK announced on Wednesday that over 1300 people in Iran had lost their lives due to the deadly COVID-19, which has spread across Iran due to the regime’s inaction. These revelations have infuriated the Iranian regime’s officials.
The MEK announced on Wednesday that over 1300 people in Iran had lost their lives due to the deadly COVID-19, which has spread across Iran due to the regime’s inaction. These revelations have infuriated the Iranian regime’s officials.

The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq or MEK) announced on Wednesday that over 1300 people in Iran had lost their lives due to the deadly COVID-19, which has spread across Iran due to the regime’s inaction.

These revelations have infuriated the Iranian regime’s officials who have been trying to cover up the true dimensions of this crisis. Instead of taking preventive measures to help the Iranian people, the regime by disseminating lies against its main opposition tries to hide the truth.

On March 3, 2020, the IRIB, the official news agency of the regime, in an outrageous lie, claimed that there has been a “Riot in MEK’s Coronavirus stricken camp in Albania.”

“The discriminatory behavior of different layers within the MEK has led to acts of personal revenge among members of the grouplet. This coupled with repression and lack of proper care provided to those infected with Coronavirus has led to a major riot in the camp. So far, there is no precise information on the casualties and damages,” reads the IRIB piece adding: “Reliable reports say that MEK patients who have died because of Coronavirus are being buried in total silence and a news blackout in a piece of land designated for the victims of the virus.”

In an interview with the state-run IRNA news agency, Hamid Baidinejadthe regime’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, said: “The MEK’s network and other opponents of the Islamic Republic outside Iran are willing to force us into an intellectual deadlock, by designing a news and media policy,” he continued, “The MEK members and the opposition’s network have been pursuing a predesigned propaganda to induce  that [the regime] is on one hand in an international isolation and countries are not willing to send urgent aid to Iran and on the other hand [the regime] is ready to reject the international aid, even at the risk of losing lives of the people. The main purpose of this propaganda is to create distrust among people and the [regime’s] officials.”  Baidinejad claimed this, while footages from Iran shows how to the regime stockpiles the mask and disinfectants instead of distributing them among people.

Despite the spread of the COVID-19, the regime has deliberately avoided distributing preventive medical resources and equipment which are essentially in the possession of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) and regime officials. Instead, they either dedicate the equipment to themselves or sell them on the black market. The state media have acknowledged that such equipment is sometimes sold at 10 times the actual price.

In addition, the regime’s criminal cover-up of the extent of the Coronavirus in Iran confirms that it is not willing to take any action to save lives of the Iranian people.

In another example, outraged by the continues efforts of the Iranian Resistance, particularly those of Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), to mobilize the international community to help the Iranian people and revealing the true death toll of the Coronavirus death toll, the state-run RajaNews news agency wrote on March 2: In the race between [opposition] media outlets in fabricating Coronavirus death toll…. Maryam Rajavi has defeated others.”

MEK’s revelations receive vast media coverage

Despite the regime’s cover-up and its failed attempts to reject the MEK’s revelations of the Coronavirus death toll, international media outlets have published the actual number announced by the MEK.

In its article published on Monday, the Washington Times referred to the MEK’s announcement of the COVID-19 death tally which exceeded 1000 people and wrote: “MEK said that a citizen sentenced to death for his part in the November street protests has contracted the disease. MEK said there have been 300 deaths in the city of Qom and 209 in Tehran.”

Breitbart, while referring to the MEK’s earlier announcement of the Coronavirus death toll, as of Sunday, which had exceeded 650, wrote: “The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), which advocates against the Islamic revolutionary regime internationally, announced in a press release Monday that, using its sources within hospitals in the country, it estimated that as many as 650 people had died in Iran since the outbreak there began in February. A little less than half of those deaths, about 300, allegedly occurred in Qom, the city to first confirm a case of novel coronavirus, PMOI/MEK officials stated.”

As Mrs. Maryam Rajavi had stated earlier: “The only thing that matters for this regime and its officials is to keep their grip on power. People’s lives, health, and resources have no value for the ruling mullahs. The Iranian people have suffered the greatest damage and losses under their rule, as a result of external war, domestic repression, poverty, unemployment, and illnesses.”

As the Coronavirus death toll rises in Iran, the regime tries to downplay and cover-up this disaster to maintain its rule. This has not only spread the COVID-19 among the Iranians, but it has also turned Iran to the epicenter of this virus, from where it has reportedly spread to different countries, such as Canada, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Australia, and Kuwait. In this regard, the New York Times wrote on February 28: “Infections in neighboring countries and even some as far as Canada, Norway and New Zealand have been traced to Iran.” The Associated Press also reported: “All of Bahrain’s cases link back to Iran.”

Therefore, as Mrs. Maryam Rajavi has said: “The United Nations, World Health Organization, and other international human rights organizations must compel the religious fascism ruling Iran to make public all the facts and figures regarding COVID-19 and provide them to relevant international organizations in order to save the lives of the people of Iran and other countries in the region.”
