U.S. No Deal With North Korea Reassures People of Iran

Going into the summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, many thought that U.S. President Donald Trump was going to ensure that a deal was made. It was not the case.

During the subsequent press conference, Trump explained his reasons for walking away without a deal, explaining that North Korea was essentially demanding that sanctions are lifted in their entirety. He said: “They were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas that we wanted, but we couldn’t give up all of the sanctions for that. (…) We had to walk away from that.”

Many believed that Trump was so adamant that he was going to strike a deal that he would have given North Korea a number of concessions. Had he done so, he would have fallen into the same trap as former U.S. President Barack Obama during the nuclear negotiations with Iran.

Obama ended up striking a terribly weak deal that benefitted only Iran. He lifted sanctions, promising that Iran’s behaviour would moderate. But the Iranian regime does not work in the same way as other countries. It took a deal that resulted in Iran having access to billions upon billions of dollars and it proceeded to continue its rampage through the Middle East. Now the Iranian regime is plotting terrorist attacks even further beyond its borders. Last year alone, several EU intelligence agencies foiled a number of plots on European soil.

The fact that Trump will not give in to North Korea is good news for the people of Iran who are relying on the international community to maintain pressure on the Iranian regime.

Since the end of 2017, the people of Iran have been protesting and holding anti-government demonstrations and they are determined to see regime change. They have lived through decades of oppression and have watched foreign leaders make a mess of their policy towards Iran.

They were given false hope when Obama basically handed the regime a huge sum of cash. They should have seen some sort of improvement in their lives but instead they witnessed the clerical regime plundering the nation’s wealth on terrorist exploits abroad.
The regime also became even bolder in its actions during Obama’s time in office. Obama turned a blind eye to the regime’s belligerence and malign activity, so the regime took this as a green light to continue. Proof that it would not be held accountable.

However, times have changed and the golden days of Obama are over. President Trump took office with bold promises. He said that he would deal with the Iran problem and the resulting crisis in the Middle East thoroughly. So far he has kept to his word and he is not falling into the trap of turning a blind eye.

Trump has shown that he will not bow to pressure from his allies. Despite pleas from the Europeans, he pulled out of the nuclear agreement. He also re-imposed sanctions and has warned the EU that its attempts to circumvent them will be clearly monitored.

It seems like Trump is not going to back down on his vow to pressure the Iranian regime.
