Iran: Smuggling of goods increases

Since Hassan Rouhani became the president of the clerical regime, import of goods smuggled into the country, compared to official imports, has increased dramatically.

This increase is a telling indicator that proves the fact that the regime has lost control of the country’s economic situation more than ever.

Habibullah Haghighi, the head of “Headquarters of fighting smuggling of goods and currency” has said that while the total official import imports to the country was 50 billion dollars in 2014, imports of smuggled and non-customs goods reached 40% of this figure and amounted to about 20 billion dollars. (The website of ” Headquarters of fighting smuggling of goods and currency “, May 11, 2015).

In this regard, it has to be noted that:

1 – The immediate consequence of losing or giving up control of imports into the country is an indication of a failed economy. The main agent and driver of the trade sector in Iran are the state companies affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and the Iranian regime’s Supreme Leader.

2. The state companies, hand in hand with the state banks, at the same time are the main factors promoting the spread of corruption in Iran. Therefore, their aggression and invasion, plunges the country’s economy more and more into the corruption. This vision makes the business and investment climate in Iran, especially for non-governmental sector and the foreign investors, extremely unfavorable.

3. In these circumstances, the ability of Iranian economy to produce employment is more and more reduced. This inability has put the unemployment of the younger and educated generation in a perspective that could further increase the current 40% rate of unemployment of the graduates of higher education institutions and universities that the Iranian regime Speaker of the Parliament has admitted.
4. Unemployment and poverty in Iran has a political root that is related to the immutable political structure of the clerical regime ruling Iran. The unemployed and disadvantaged but informed young people of Iran, in order to fight unemployment and deprivation, are therefore logically drawn to confrontation with this political issue.
