Iran: Strong earthquake in western province leaves dozens injured

A powerful earthquake of 6.1 magnitude struck early Monday in Ilam province in western Iran, causing injuries and damage.

The US Geological Survey reported the magnitude of the quake at 6.3 and said its epicentre was at a depth of 10 kilometres.

State television footage showed destroyed houses, buildings and cars in the city. Water, electricity, and telephone lines in Abdanan, located in the province of Ilam, have been cut, said IRNA.

Aftershocks could be felt in three provinces including Ilam, Lorestan and Khuzestan, IRNA said.

According to state-run TV, the quake occurred at 7:02 am (0232 GMT) near the town of Mour-Mouri.

Mohammad Reza Morvarid, the local governor, said an unspecified number of people have been injured. Still, he said, “many people have been injured and many buildings have been damaged.”

One report said that 40 injured people had been rescued by emergency teams in Abdanan.
