After Biden Fails to Mention Iran During SOTU, Lawmakers Push Measure Supporting Iranian Protesters

Lawmakers introduced the resolution three days before the anniversary of the 1979 Iranian revolution when protesters overthrew the last shah, or king, of Iran. The country soon thereafter became governed by an Islamist theocracy, which remains in power today.

“This unprecedented bipartisan resolution should be a compass for Washington to adopt the right policy on Iran,” said Majid Sadeghpour, political director of the Organization of Iranian-American Communities. “It denounces the shah’s ruthless and corrupt dictatorship and the current ruling religious tyranny. It supports the call for a secular, non-nuclear Iranian republic.”

Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, which seeks to overthrow the regime and has influence in Washington, also spoke at Wednesday’s press conference, expressing hope for the success of the current protest movement.

“I am confident that this revolution will succeed because it is led by those who are willing to pay the price,” she said.

US Congress Introduces Resolution in Support of Push for Democracy and Freedom in Iran

CHICAGO: The US House of Representatives on Wednesday introduced a resolution expressing support for the people of Iran and denouncing the “monarchic dictatorship and religious tyranny” of the governing regime in Tehran. Although the resolution has no legal authority, it reinforces American support for the Iranian people and condemnation of the ongoing violations of human rights by the country’s government. More than 165 members of Congress, from both main parties, co-sponsored the resolution, which is expected to easily pass when it comes up for a final vote.

She thanked Congress for its continuing support but said more must be done to end the regime’s ongoing use of violence to crack down on protesters.

House Lawmakers Sharpen Message on Iran by Asking Europe To Cut Ties

House lawmakers joined together once again on Wednesday to unveil a resolution in support of Iranian protesters, but this time did so in a way that signaled a serious sharpening of the US Congress’ tone towards the government in Tehran. A resolution unveiled the morning after Joe Biden addressed a joint session of the House and Senate for his State of the Union would once again declare the US Congress’ support for a democratic government in Iran while also including language implicitly calling on the US’s European allies to cut ties with Tehran by closing consulates and calling diplomats back to their home country.

Wednesday’s announcement marks the second House resolution aimed at supporting Iranian protesters — and, by extension, delegitimising Tehran’s government — that the 118th Congress has pursued in less than two months. Maryam Rajavi, president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, was an invited guest at the event and addressed the lawmakers attending.

Pahlavi Monarchy Resurrected the Mullahs of Iran

In 1953, absolute monarchy in Iran was waning into nothing more than a symbolic institution like those in certain European countries and making room for a democratic system with the guidance of political leaders such as Dr. Mohammad Mosadeq, who nationalized the huge British oil holdings in Iran, and almost succeeded in toppling the shah.
