Iran News: Global Concern Grows Over Clerical Regime’s Nuclear Program at UN General Assembly

At the recent UN General Assembly’s First Committee meeting, global representatives expressed mounting concern over the Iranian regime’s expanding nuclear activities. Various countries, including Argentina, Australia, and Japan, voiced their fears about Tehran’s defiance of international nuclear agreements and its lack of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Ricardo Lagorio, Argentina’s permanent representative to the UN, reiterated concerns already raised in IAEA meetings, stating, “We repeat our concerns over Iran’s nuclear program and its impact on the disarmament and non-proliferation regime.” Similarly, Australia’s representative emphasized the regime’s failure to comply with its nuclear safeguards, urging Tehran to “fully and promptly implement the joint statement of March 4, 2023” and cease its provocative actions.

Slovenia’s UN representative, Samuel Žbogar, called for the regime to halt all proliferation-sensitive activities and resume verification efforts under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Belgium’s representative echoed these sentiments, accusing Tehran of continuing to enrich uranium with no civilian purpose and denying the IAEA adequate access.

Kuwait’s representative, Abdulaziz Abdullah Thamer Al-Saeedi, expressed deep concern over the rapid developments in Iran’s nuclear program. He emphasized the need for constructive and swift agreements between Iran and relevant countries to ensure regional security and stability. Kuwait also urged Tehran to respect uranium enrichment limits for peaceful purposes and to cooperate fully with the IAEA.

Japan, too, voiced serious concerns about Iran’s nuclear expansion. Ambassador Kazuyuki Yamazaki urged Tehran to fully cooperate with the IAEA “to achieve concrete results” in resolving outstanding issues.

Meanwhile, Luxembourg’s representative highlighted that Iran has violated the JCPOA for over five years and continues to evade meaningful cooperation with the IAEA. He called for Tehran to return to full compliance with its obligations.

In addition to nuclear concerns, the UN session addressed the regime’s destabilizing role in the region. France condemned Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen for their continued attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea, which threaten regional security. The French delegation stressed the need for the Houthis to cease these destabilizing actions immediately.

Despite international opposition, the clerical regime in Iran appears determined to pursue its nuclear ambitions, using them as a potential means to ensure the regime’s survival. However, with increasing internal opposition and widespread protests, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s reliance on suppression may not guarantee long-term stability.

As Khamenei’s regime accelerates its pursuit of nuclear weapons, global inaction merely delays the inevitable, making it imperative for the international community to intervene before it’s too late.
