Iran's population tops 70 million

TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran's population stands at 70 million although its growth has slowed over the past decade, according to the results of a 2006 nationwide census published on Tuesday.

The head of Iran Statistics Centre, Mohammad Madad, said the population of Iran is 70.47 million, with 103 women for every 104 men.

Iran: Ties and bow-ties banned

NCRI - Chief of State Security Forces (SSF), Yadollah Hosseini announced that wearing tie and bow-ties are banned in northern province of Gilan, according to State-owned 'Shomal News' website. 

"We have issued a directive to all wholesalers and retailers warning them against importing or selling such items," said Hosseini.

Iran wants to keep sexes apart in hospitals

AFP - Iran's conservative government is encouraging doctors and nurses to treat patients only of the same gender in a bid to bring healthcare in line with its Islamic laws, press reports said Tuesday.

Health minister Kamran Bagheri Lankarani said that hospitals should implement a 1998 parliament bill that stipulates segregation of sexes known as the "initiative to conform medical care with Sharia law."

Children living in poor condition in IranNCRI - Under the pressure of extreme poverty, a man gassed his wife and six children to death in Tabriz, provincial capital of Azerbaijan. The mother, 41, was found suffocated along with her children aged between four and 14. The husband hanged himself after killing the whole family.

1,300 killed or wounded in western Iran quakeNCRI - At least 70 people were reported killed when a powerful earthquake struck Lorestan Province, western Iran, on Friday, wiping out villages and sending panicked residents fleeing from their homes. Over 1,200 people were also reported to have been wounded.

According to official reports the quake was rated at 6.0 on the Richter scale which struck at 04:47 am (01:17 GMT).

Iran's President Bans All Western Music - AP

ImageAssociated Press - Hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has banned all Western music from Iran's state radio and TV stations — an eerie reminder of the 1979 Islamic revolution when popular music was outlawed as "un-Islamic" under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Today, though, the sounds of hip-hop can be heard blaring from car radios in Tehran's streets, and Eric Clapton's "Rush" and the Eagles' "Hotel California" regularly accompany Iranian broadcasts.
