The League of Poets: Statement of Solidarity With the Recent Uprising of Iranian People

The League of Poets in a statement on November 23 expressed solidarity with the Iranian people’s nationwide uprising.

The following is the full text of the statement:

Statement of solidarity with the recent uprising of Iranian people

November 2019

We support the new wave of social uprisings and protests by the Iranian people to achieve their basic democratic and economic rights. Corruption and mismanagement in this regime have resulted in millions of Iranian people and workers to live below the poverty line.

We believe that under the reign of this dictatorship, Iranian people will continue facing poverty, high prices, unemployment, and repression and so will their quest for democracy and human rights by means of social unrest and uprisings.

In the recent nationwide uprising, hundreds of people have been killed in various cities by direct firing by regime’s security forces, thousands have been injured, arrested, and imprisoned, though the actual number is much higher. We support all political prisoners in Iran, the women, and men, young and old, students, workers, teachers, who are politically incarcerated share one crime: regime change in Iran. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners detained during recent uprisings and protests. We urge all human rights organizations and individuals around the world to join this Statement of Solidarity with the Iranian people and offer their support, in every way they can, to help the Iranian people and youth to achieve their rightful demands.

We urge the United Nations and the international community of human rights defenders to strongly condemn the suppression of the Iranian people’s protests and call on the United Nations to urgently send a UN delegation to investigate the situation of the martyrs, the injured, the arrested and imprisoned people in Iran.

Silence, vis-à-vis the crimes against humanity perpetrated in Iran every day is absolutely unacceptable. The Security Council must declare the regime and its leaders responsible for the crime against humanity for which they must face justice. The Security Council must declare the regime is committing a crime against humanity.
