U.S. slams violations of women’s rights in Iran

The U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, has criticized the Iranian regime’s record on women’s rights.

Ambassador Samantha Powers said: “In Iran, women are legally barred from holding some government positions, there are no laws against domestic violence, and adultery is punishable by stoning, making it wholly inappropriate that Iran assume a leadership role on women’s rights and welfare at the UN.”

Power expressed “extreme disappointment” at the Iranian regime joining the board of UN Women, created in 2010 to push for gender equality and empowerment of women.

Repression of Iranian women and activists has worsened under Hassan Rouhani, a UN rights investigator said in March.

Women are deprived of most public rights and freedoms, even from watching matches in stadiums and from singing.

They are systematically dismissed from social activities.

Mullahs interfere in all aspect of women’s lives to suppress them even further.
Fundamentalists see women as their most important social threat because they seek and demand freedom and equality.

Women’s demands and their determination pose the most dangerous threat to the fundamentalists.
