Women’s committee of NCRI calls on rights organizations to support Iranian women arisen for freedom

NCRI – Ms. Sarvnaz Chitsaz, Chair of the Women’s Committee of the Iranian Resistance, lauded female students’ perseverance against the clerical regime’s suppressive restrictions and regulations and called on all human rights and women’s rights organizations to condemn the misogynist policies of the regime and support the uprising of Iranian women and girls.

On Wednesday, May 5, more than 2,000 girl students of Tehran University staged a protest against a decision that forces girl students to wear a black cover over their faces. The protest started when the agents of Herasat (branch of the Ministry of Intelligence and Security – MOIS – in the university) prevented the students wearing headscarves from entering the university. The offensive measure provoked anger among students. As a way of protest, female students later tore apart and stepped on the so-called Disciplinary Council Directive, which were posted on the university’s walls and doors by the regime’s agents. They began chanting anti-regime slogans at the Arts College and staged a demonstration. The 4-hour protest was also supported by male students.

In another suppressive move, the clerical regime has called for a demonstration by Bassij paramilitary force and the Revolutionary Guards against so-called “improper veiling” after Friday prayers, May 7. The planned demonstration is to start from Tehran University’s main gate through to Enghelab Square.

Ms. Chitsaz emphasized: The aim of such street shows under the cover of “Restoring Islamic Culture and Values” is to create an atmosphere of intimidation and fear in order to prevent the spread of social upheavals in which women play an important role. However, such desperate moves by a regime that has executed tens of thousands of women activists and suppressed women under the pretext of “improper veiling” will not suffice to resolve the plethora of its problems.
