Human Events<\/strong> – James Zumwalt<\/p>\n

When violence in other parts of the world endangers lives, the U.S. must selectively choose where to intervene and where not.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0Two groups of rebels endure death and destruction today.\u00a0 President Obama has opted to help one\u2014which has done nothing to show itself worthy of risking a single American life\u2014but not the other\u2014which has proven invaluable in exposing a major threat to our future existence.<\/p>\n

One rebel group opposes Libya\u2019s Mummar Gaddafi.\u00a0 We do not really know who makes up this group are or what they represent.\u00a0 We have no legal obligation to help them.\u00a0 There is no immediate threat to U.S. national security interests mandating our involvement.\u00a0 No measurable objective is offered to provide us with a well-defined exit strategy.\u00a0 Despite all this, President Obama has commited U.S. military forces to a third war to save Libyan lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The other rebel group opposes Iran\u2019s mullahs.\u00a0 Known as Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK), we know a lot about them.\u00a0 Opposed to the Shah of Iran long ago, MEK turned its focus against Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini when he came to power in 1979.\u00a0 In Khomeini, it saw a much more dangerous threat to the Iranian people\u2014Islamic fundamentalism.\u00a0 Meanwhile, Khomeini saw MEK as a threat to his regime.\u00a0 In 1981, when MEK peacefully demonstrated against Khomeini, he ordered protesters shot, killing thousands.\u00a0 Driven out of Iran, MEK surprisingly ended up in 1986 in Iraq\u2014at the invitation of Saddam Hussein.<\/p>\n

Believing \u201cthe enemy of my enemy is my friend,\u201d Saddam allowed MEK to establish a base\u2014 Camp Ashraf \u2014on the border with Iran.\u00a0 From there, MEK conducted numerous cross-border raids with devastating impact.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Reeling from these attacks and using the false promise of improved relations with the U.S., Iran convinced Washington in 1997 to designate MEK a terrorist organization.\u00a0 The U.K. and European Union followed suit.\u00a0 Internationally, MEK became isolated as Tehran became more aggressive.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2003, as the U.S. prepared to invade Iraq, Tehran made another false promise to the U.S.:\u00a0 De-fang MEK and Iran would stay out of Iraq.\u00a0 Again the U.S. took the bait.\u00a0 As U.S. forces attacked Camp Ashraf, MEK\u2014not wanting to fight us\u2014voluntarily disarmed.\u00a0 In doing so, they accepted \u201cprotected persons\u201d status under the Fourth Geneva Convention (prohibiting extradition to Iran, forced repatriation to any country, or relocation in Iraq ), with U.S. forces to guarantee their protection.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Having renounced violence, MEK subsequently sought its delisting as a terrorist organization.\u00a0 Its efforts paid off with the U.K. and the European Union.\u00a0 But not the U.S.\u2014which recently has even been ordered by an American appellate court to reassess this decision.<\/p>\n

The U.S. failure to delist MEK is unwarranted, not only because MEK has renounced terrorism, but also because of the risks it has taken in using its network within Iran to reveal Tehran\u2019s secret nuclear arms program.\u00a0 MEK was first to reveal the program\u2019s existence in 2002, and has continued to report on it ever since\u2014with a 90% accuracy rate.\u00a0 On April 6, MEK held a news conference to disclose yet another Iranian facility, the \u201cTABA complex,\u201d which for four-and-a-half years has secretly been manufacturing centrifuges.\u00a0<\/p>\n

U.S. intelligence agencies\u2019 assessments on Iran have been lacking for want of in-country assets\u2014a void MEK fills.\u00a0 It provides the West with highly credible information about Tehran\u2019s nuclear program at great cost.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With a dominant Shia population in both Iraq and Iran, Tehran wields influence over Baghdad\u2019s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.\u00a0 Because of this, Tehran pressures Maliki to eradicate the Camp Ashraf \u201cproblem\u201d by returning its residents to Iran for execution.\u00a0 Perhaps unwilling to go that far yet, Maliki nonetheless does Iran\u2019s bidding.\u00a0 Iraqi security forces surround Camp Ashraf, holding MEK residents hostage.\u00a0 Maliki allows Iranian agents into the camp to identify some for special targeting.\u00a0 In July 2009, an unprovoked and violent encounter resulted when Iraqi forces stormed the camp, killing several unarmed residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is not a coincidence what happened immediately after MEK\u2019s April 6 news conference revealing Iran\u2019s TABA complex.\u00a0 On April 7, Maliki ordered U.S. forces outside the camp to leave.\u00a0 On April 8, 2,500 Iraqi soldiers in armored vehicles launched an attack against the 3,400 unarmed residents imprisoned there.<\/p>\n

Videos of the assault are shocking.\u00a0 Iraqi soldiers, confronting unarmed targets, \u201cbravely\u201d stand in the open, shooting residents like \u201cfish in a barrel.\u201d\u00a0 In one case, a resident filming the massacre to document the atrocities is gunned down for doing so by an Iraqi soldier.\u00a0 Other residents, simply carrying wounded friends to safety, are shot in the back.\u00a0 Iraqi vehicles are seen running over victims.<\/p>\n

While the U.S. had no legal obligation to intervene on behalf of Libyan rebels, it does have a legal obligation, based on its accepted role in 2003 under the Geneva Conventions, to intervene on behalf of MEK rebels being slaughtered at Camp Ashraf.\u00a0 Yet we stand aside, allowing Iran to impose its will upon them through the offices of an Iraqi leader serving as Tehran\u2019s lapdog.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is unconscionable that Obama had U.S. forces surrender their role as MEK\u2019s protectors on Maliki\u2019s orders.\u00a0 Our inaction to stop the bloodshed is a death sentence for Ashraf\u2019s residents, a violation of our legal obligation to protect them and contributes to the mullahs\u2019 success in eliminating an opposition group seeking to end Iran\u2019s nuclear program.\u00a0 Sadly, while intervening in Libya to help rebels who may well turn on us later, we choose not to intervene in Iraq to help rebels who have proven worthy of our intervention.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

As Ashraf burns, President Obama fiddles to curry favor with an Iraqi murderer.<\/p>\n
