On April 8, at the behest of the Iranian regime and on the orders of the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, 2500 armed Iraqi forces backed by armored vehicles attacked defenseless and unarmed Iranian dissidents in Camp Ashraf. As a result of the attack, 35 people, including 8 women were killed and 350 were injured. A number of the residents died after being run over by armored vehicles.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Armed Iraqi forces continue their presence inside the camp. The threats and the inhumane siege are also continuing.<\/p>\n
The wounded residents are in critical condition due to a lack of access to medical facilities.<\/p>\n
The Iraqi government refused to allow a high-ranking European Parliament delegation to visit Camp Ashraf in April.<\/p>\n
Forcible displacement of 3,400 unarmed refugees would be illegal and would violate United Nations standards, international law and International Humanitarian Law.<\/p>\n
Any displacement of the residents of the camp to another location in Iraq would only pave the way for more threats and such displacement must be prevented.<\/p>\n
On May 10, the European Parliament delegation chaired by MEP Struan Stevenson that had visited Iraq proposed a solution for the Ashraf issue in Strasburg.<\/p>\n
We support this proposal and call on the Iraqi government to fulfill the preconditions outlined in this proposal and prepare the way for the resolution of this matter.<\/p>\n
We call on the Slovakian government, the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Baroness Ashton, and the international community to support the European Parliament proposal for Ashraf, and work to bring about the following:<\/p>\n
1.\u00a0Assumption of the protection of Ashraf by the United nations and the establishment of a UN monitoring team in Ashraf with the support of the US and the EU<\/p>\n
2.\u00a0Immediate withdrawal of Iraqi forces from Ashraf, an end to the siege, and free access for the wounded in Ashraf to medical care<\/p>\n
