{"id":11043,"date":"2011-07-30T12:03:15","date_gmt":"2011-07-30T11:03:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/multimedia\/ashraf-liberty\/11043-anglo-iranians-from-barnet-call-for-relatives-protection-in-iraq"},"modified":"2023-01-14T00:04:17","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T23:04:17","slug":"anglo-iranians-from-barnet-call-for-relatives-protection-in-iraq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/ashraf-liberty\/anglo-iranians-from-barnet-call-for-relatives-protection-in-iraq\/","title":{"rendered":"Anglo-Iranians from Barnet call for relatives\u2019 protection in Iraq"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Barnet-Potters-Bar-Times\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-37887\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/07\/Barnet-Potters-Bar-Times.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"200\" style=\"margin: 5px;float: left\" \/>TIMES Series<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0 By Natalie O&#8217;Neill\u00a0 &#8211; 29 July 2011 &#8211; Distraught Anglo-Iranians from Barnet joined a mass protest demanding protection of refugees in Iraq yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of residents gathered outside the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees office, urging it to help their family and friends living in Camp Ashraf.<\/p>\n<p>Camp Ashraf is occupied by 3,400 members of the Iranian resistance, Peoples of Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI). <\/p>\n<p>The PMOI movement has been based in Iraq since the 1980s and raises awareness of human rights violations in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>It calls for an end to what it refers to as a &#8220;two-year-long inhumane siege of Ashraf\u201d, suppressing residents and limiting supplies including medication. <\/p>\n<p>The camp has become an icon of hope for a free democratic Iran but further attacks were reported on April 8, when the Iraqi army shot unarmed civilians, leaving 34 dead and hundreds more injured. <\/p>\n<p>Yesterday&#8217;s rally was held on the second anniversary of the 2009 massacre in Camp Ashraf, which left 11 people dead.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters also raised concern about the Iraqi government\u2019s decision to expel members of the PMOI from the country by the end of the year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TIMES Series &ndash;&nbsp; By Natalie O&rsquo;Neill&nbsp; &ndash; 29 July 2011 &ndash; Distraught Anglo-Iranians from Barnet joined a mass protest demanding protection of refugees in Iraq yesterday.
