NCRI – In an international conference held in Paris on Friday, January 6, at the invitation of the CFID (French Committee for Democracy and Human Rights in Iran), dozens of distinguished American and European dignitaries warned of obstructions and non-cooperation by the Iranian regime and Government of Iraq in guaranteeing a peaceful solution for Camp Ashraf, where members of the Iranian opposition reside in Iraq.<\/p>\n

The conference speakers were Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the Iranian Resistance; Gov. Howard Dean, former Governor Vermont, Chair of the Democratic National Committee (2005-2009) and US presidential candidate (2004);\u00a0 Gov. Tom Ridge, former Governor of Pennsylvania and the first US Homeland Security Secretary (2003-2005); Louis Freeh, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (1993-2001); Gov. Ed Rendell, Chair of the Democratic National Committee (1999-2001) and Governor of Pennsylvania (2002-2011); Judge Michael Mukasey, US Attorney General in the Bush Administration (2007-2009); Ambassador Mitchell Reiss, former Director of Policy Planning at the US Department of State; General James Conway, Commandant of the US Marine Corps (2006-2010); Rep. Patrick Kennedy, Member of US House of Representatives (1995-2011); Gen. Chuck Wald, former Deputy Commander of US European Command; Gen. David Phillips, Commander of U.S. Military Police (2008-2011); Prof. Alan Dershowitz, one of the most prominent advocates of individual rights and the most well-known lawyer in criminal cases in the world; Ambassador Dell Dailey, Head of the State Department’s counterterrorism office (2007-09); Col. Wesley Martin, former Senior Anti-terrorism Force Protection Officer for all Coalition Forces in Iraq and Commander of Forward Operation Base\u00a0 in Ashraf; Prof. Ruth Wedgwood, Chair of International Law and Diplomacy at Johns Hopkins University; Philippe Douste-Blazy, Former French Foreign Minister and to the UN Secretary General; Alain Vivien, former French Minister of State for European Affairs; Rita S\u00fcssmuth, former President of German Bundestag; G\u00fcnter Verheugen, European Commissioner (1999-2010) and former Advisory Minister in German Foreign Ministry; and Sen. Lucio Malan, Member of Italian Senate.<\/p>\n

Below is speech by Ambassador Mitchell Reiss:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thank you Monsieur Minister.\u00a0 Madame Rajavi, distinguished guests, members of the audience and those watching around the world, ladies and gentlemen, fellow panelists, and most importantly, the residents of Camp Ashraf, it is an honor to be here today.\u00a0 It is an honor to be here today and once again raise our voices to draw the world\u2019s attention to the situation at Camp Ashraf.\u00a0 As you know, the situation has been changing rapidly in the past few weeks.\u00a0 December 31 was the artificial deadline established by Prime Minister Maliki for evacuating Camp Ashraf.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Many of us feared that we were heading towards another violent confrontation and the deaths of innocent lives as we saw last April.\u00a0 A humanitarian catastrophe was averted through the extraordinary leadership of Madame Rajavi and the willingness of the Camp Ashraf residents to give up their home of 26 years.\u00a0 Madame Rajavi has worked tirelessly these past few weeks to do everything in her power to protect the people at Camp Ashraf, often having to make difficult decisions under great time pressure on matters of life and death.\u00a0 The residents of Camp Ashraf could not ask for a better leader.\u00a0 Her courage and determination continue to serve as an inspiration to us all.<\/p>\n

We know that the situation remains grave and yet there is hope.\u00a0 Last September, I described to you some political and legal trends that were starting to help our cause.\u00a0 I said that these trends favored the forces of justice and freedom in three important ways: at the United Nations and in European capitals, with the media\u2019s coverage of this story, and within the U.S. government.\u00a0 I am pleased to report to you today that these trends have continued to mature and that there has been progress in all three areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Under Madame Rajavi\u2019s leadership and with your help Camp Ashraf has become an international issue.\u00a0 It has received the attention of the UN Secretary General, the UN Security Council, heads of state, the European Union, national parliaments, and major human rights organizations.\u00a0 The international media is finally starting to report on this story and report the facts accurately.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Further, there is now a formidable bipartisan political coalition in the United States that supports this cause.\u00a0 Senior politicians, military officers, national security experts, ambassadors and governors, as well as members of the Senate and the House of Representatives are all united in calling for the United States to take full responsibility and fulfill its pledge to safeguard the Camp Ashraf residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We are all united in calling for the State Department to immediately delist the MEK. These voices are being heard at the very highest levels of the U.S. government, including at the White House.\u00a0 This is an impressive achievement.\u00a0 So yes, there has been progress but there has not been as much progress as we would like, and there has not been as much progress as fast as we would like.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Our work is not yet finished.\u00a0 We will only be finished when every single resident of Camp Ashraf with no exception, is safe, secure, and free. Our being here today at this conference is another step forward towards our goal.\u00a0 It is therefore my great pleasure and great honor to introduce our first speaker, Madame Rajavi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
