Camp Ashraf\u00a0 (In page 265 of report)
Camp Ashraf (now renamed \u201cCamp New Iraq\u201d by the Iraqi authorities) is home to approximately 3,400 members of the Mujahedin e-Khalq (MeK). On 8 April, according to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, 36 residents were killed and many more injured in an attack on the camp by the Iraqi government. Subsequently, the Iraqi government announced its intention to close Camp Ashraf by the end of 2011.<\/p>\n
The UK publicly condemned the actions of the Iraqi government and continued throughout 2011 to urge them to ensure that the residents of Camp Ashraf are treated in accordance with the rights and protections they enjoy under international human rights and domestic Iraqi law.<\/p>\n
We have encouraged the government and the leadership of Camp Ashraf to engage in constructive negotiation to reach a peaceful and durable solution over the future of the residents of the camp and continue to show flexibility over the deadline to close the camp. In December, Prime Minister Al-Maliki announced the extension of the deadline for the camp\u2019s closure until April 2012, on the condition that the residents started moving to a new temporary location in Iraq.<\/p>\n
We hope that the peaceful relocation of the residents will begin soon so that the UN High Commission for Refugees can conduct a refugee status determination process for the residents in accordance with its mandate. The UK supports the efforts of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Martin Kobler, to try to find a peaceful solution to the problem.<\/p>\n
