{"id":12825,"date":"2013-02-09T19:32:06","date_gmt":"2013-02-09T19:32:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/multimedia\/ashraf-liberty\/12825-mep-struan-stevenson-move-liberty-residents-back-to-ashraf-now"},"modified":"2020-04-12T11:13:21","modified_gmt":"2020-04-12T10:13:21","slug":"mep-struan-stevenson-move-liberty-residents-back-to-ashraf-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/ashraf-liberty\/mep-struan-stevenson-move-liberty-residents-back-to-ashraf-now\/","title":{"rendered":"MEP Struan Stevenson: Move Liberty residents back to Ashraf now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/images\/stories\/2013\/people\/stevenson-june282008.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"margin: 5px; float: left;\" \/>NCRI &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/images\/stories\/2013\/dcuments\/stevenson-20130209.pdf\">The President of European Parliament\u2019s Delegation for Relations with Iraq<\/a> has condemned the &#8216;appalling&#8217; mortar and missile attack on Camp Liberty on Saturday which left at least six people dead and 100 injured.<\/p>\n<p>The statement by the President of the Delegation said he was &#8216;shocked&#8217; by the violence and called on US Secretary of State John Kerry to take urgent action to relocate the camp&#8217;s 3100 residents to safety, the European Parliament&#8217;s Delegation for Relations with Iraq said.<\/p>\n<p>Residents and their legal representatives had warned repeatedly about the extreme vulnerability of Liberty &#8211; where they are crammed into squalid prison conditions &#8211; but each time their fears were discounted by the UN, it added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/ashraf\/12819\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LATEST UPDATE ON CAMP LIBERTY ATTACK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The delegation&#8217;s president Struan Stevenson MEP said: &#8220;Camp Liberty\u2019s atrocious prison-like conditions, its inadequate protection and lack of progress in relocating these innocent refugees and asylum seekers to third countries, further necessitates the return of these residents to Camp Ashraf until they can be taken out of Iraq to countries of safety.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The US Government and the UN are directly responsible for the security and protection of these refugees and they have failed them miserably.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hold them fully accountable for this latest atrocity. The 3100 residents crammed into Camp Liberty are sitting ducks who can be murdered at will by Iraqis and their Iranian sponsors.
