{"id":13611,"date":"2013-05-06T08:41:06","date_gmt":"2013-05-06T07:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/issues\/economy\/13611-iran-historic-nooshabad-closed-down-to-bar-mixed-gender-tourist-groups"},"modified":"2023-01-14T09:43:02","modified_gmt":"2023-01-14T08:43:02","slug":"iran-historic-nooshabad-closed-down-to-bar-mixed-gender-tourist-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/economy\/iran-historic-nooshabad-closed-down-to-bar-mixed-gender-tourist-groups\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran: Historic Nooshabad closed down to bar &#8216;mixed gender&#8217; tourist groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"nooshabad-entrance-200\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-39919\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/05\/nooshabad-entrance-200.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"float: left;margin: 5px\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>NCRI &#8211; Iran&#8217;s ancient underground city of Nooshabad has been sealed off and closed to the public because extremist officials do not want it visited by &#8216;mixed gender&#8217; tourist groups.<\/p>\n<p>Up to 1,000 tourists a day usually visit the 1,500-year-old site around 8km north of Kashan in the central Iranian desert.<\/p>\n<p>But state security forces expelled visitors on Monday (May 5) and locked the gates on the orders of a public prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p>A local official told the state-run Mehr news agency: &#8220;It seems that based on a directive, the entrance of mixed gender tourists groups to the historical places has been forbidden.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The state security forces closed and locked the gates to this region on the orders of the Public Prosecutor yesterday, via a phone call.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is very strange that this beautiful underground city is being closed at a time when around 700 to 1000 tourists travel here every day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nooshabad is a sprawling underground complex of labyrinthine corridors, rooms and wells covering thousands of square metres and up to 14 metres below ground.
