{"id":13734,"date":"2013-05-18T13:50:52","date_gmt":"2013-05-18T12:50:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/statements\/women\/13734-iran-women-cannot-stand-for-presidency-cleric"},"modified":"2023-01-14T09:58:48","modified_gmt":"2023-01-14T08:58:48","slug":"iran-women-cannot-stand-for-presidency-cleric","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/women\/iran-women-cannot-stand-for-presidency-cleric\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran women cannot stand for presidency: cleric"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"mohammad-yazdi\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-33902\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2009\/07\/mohammad-yazdi.jpg\" border=\"0\" style=\"float: left;margin: 5px\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>AFP &#8211; Women can not contest Iran&#8217;s June 14 presidential election, a member of the Islamic state&#8217;s electoral watchdog said in media reports on Friday, dashing the hopes of some 30 female candidates.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The law prohibits women from being president,&#8221; said hardline cleric and former judiciary chief Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi, quoted by the Mehr news agency.<\/p>\n<p>Yazdi is a prominent member of Iran&#8217;s Guardians Council, an unelected watchdog controlled by religious conservatives and appointed by Iran&#8217;s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that is tasked mainly with vetting candidates.<\/p>\n<p>The vetting process is designed to ensure candidates are faithful to the principles of the Islamic republic and its official religion.<\/p>\n<p>Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, it has rejected all female candidates for the presidency, although women have been allowed to stand in parliamentary elections and to serve as lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>A final list of hopefuls who can contest the June 14 poll is expected to be announced early next week.
