The Human Rights Committee of the Law Society of England and Wales described the attacked as a ‘violent assault’ and blamed the United nations envoy martin Kobler for exposing the Iranian dissidents to danger.<\/p>\n
Their statement read: “The attack which took place on Saturday 15 June 2013 left 3 residents dead and over 50 wounded.<\/p>\n
“This violent assault on a defenceless group of refugees violates international law and humanitarian standards. Having issued a similar statement in February of this year, following a comparable attack which left 8 residents killed, it is evident that enough has not been done to protect these refugees.<\/p>\n
“The residents of Camp Liberty have been left without protection. In Camp Ashraf they had protective helmets, safety vests and medical facilities but the Iraqi government would not let the residents transfer these to Camp Liberty.<\/p>\n
“UNAMI chief Martin Kobler who forced the residents to relocate to Camp Liberty, promised them that they would be protected and quickly moved on to safe third countries once the UN interview process was complete. This process is unnecessarily delayed and in the interim the safety of the residents cannot be guaranteed in Camp Liberty.<\/p>\n
“Camp Ashraf and Camp Liberty residents are \u201cprotected persons\u201d under the 4th Geneva Convention and entitled to international protection. Camp Liberty is not a safe location for the refugees, and was supposed to be a short term interim home.”<\/p>\n
The lawyers said it was ‘vital’ that the UN relocates the residents back to Camp Ashraf where they can be protected.<\/p>\n
The statement concluded: “The Law Society of England and Wales calls on UNAMI and the Iraqi government to investigate this attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
