Conservative MP David Amess, a leading member of the British Parliamentary Committee for Iran Freedom, issued the plea at a panel of cross-party MPs and political organisations in London this week.<\/p>\n
Speaking of the hunger strikers in Liberty, he said: “I salute these good people who are on the 58th day of hunger strike risking their own health in an effort to save the lives of others – those seven hostages taken by the Iraqi forces in the barbaric attack on camp Ashraf on September 1 this year.<\/p>\n
“During this attack, 52 unarmed defenseless refugees were brutally massacred. We have all seen the horrific attack on camp Ashraf and it is clear that something needs to be done at the international level.<\/p>\n
“Our government must immediately take concrete steps to ensure release of the seven hostages and guarantee the security of those in Liberty and thereby prevent any further loss of life to the hunger strikers.<\/p>\n
“The UK bears a huge legal and moral responsibility for the fate of all residents of Liberty and of the seven hostages. After all, it was the UK and the USA who led the coalition that took military action in Iraq and of course I was one of those people who voted for our action.<\/p>\n
“I believed what we were being told at dispatch box all those years ago and I have been let down.<\/p>\n
“The UK and the USA guaranteed the residents of Camp Ashraf protection under international law. Yet the UK has done very little to deliver on its responsibilities.<\/p>\n
“No steps have been taken to secure the release of the seven hostages; no steps have been taken to pressurize the Iraqi government to allow basic equipment to enter Liberty for the protection of its residents. Instead the UK has indeed expanded relations with Iraq.<\/p>\n
“The British government must take all necessary steps including through all international organs and international community to guarantee the release of the seven hostages including six women.<\/p>\n
“Then the British government must work with our international partners to urgently ensure that the Iraqi government provide the protection requirements at Liberty including double layered roofs for the trailers, returning all the concrete T-walls and bunkers, and ensuring the rights of hunger strikers are respected. In Liberty in particular they are being denied access to medical treatment.”<\/p>\n
