VOA NEWS – Negotiators from Iran and six world powers are meeting Thursday in their latest bid to resolve a decade-long standoff over Iran’s controversial nuclear program.<\/p>\n

The two-day talks in Geneva follow a meeting last month that both sides described as positive.<\/p>\n

Iran is seeking relief from international sanctions, while the group made up of the United States, Britain, China, France, Russia and Germany, the so-called P5+1, wants assurances that Iran is not trying to build nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

A senior U.S. official told reporters Wednesday that the six countries are prepared to offer limited sanctions relief in exchange for Iran cutting back on its uranium enrichment activity, but that any move could be canceled if Iran failed to comply.<\/p>\n

The official said the two sides are beginning to understand what a “first step” in reaching an agreement could be.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
