NCRI – Following the rainfall in Iraq in the past 48 hours, water has covered all of Camp Liberty due to the damaged infrastructures of the camp and the absence of resources. Residents are facing many problems and commute in many sections of the camp is simply impossible.<\/p>\n
The routes and roads in the camp that are not standard and asphalted are completely covered with water, sludge and mud and travel on foot is impossible. Injured or sick people are unable to leave their living trailers and enough vehicles are not available in the camp since the Iraqi government has prevented transfer of adequate vehicles from Ashraf to Camp Liberty.<\/p>\n
In many parts of the camp, water has entered the containers that are either places of residence or are storage places for food, sanitary and logistics items; thereby these living trailers are no longer habitable, food has rotted, and sanitary items have been destroyed.<\/p>\n
Since some routes used for draining of black water tanks are impossible to use, these tanks cannot be emptied. Some of these tanks have overflowed and produced a hygienic crisis in the camp that threatens residents with various diseases.<\/p>\n
Since a year ago, residents have time and again requested that Iraqi contractors come and repair the roads and drainage system of the camp at residents own expense. However, Prime Ministry agents have prevented this and imposed the present conditions on the residents.<\/p>\n
Iraqi government obstructs entry of many essential goods that are needed by residents in these circumstances and refuses to allow pipes, hoses, water pumps, sealants for sealing the trailers, and even water impermeable clothing like ponchos to enter the camp.<\/p>\n
Since long ago, at their own expense, residents had procured silicon glue to seal the cracks of the trailers, especially places damaged by missile shrapnel, but Iraqi forces prevented their entry and confiscated them. UNAMI and U.S. government representatives have been swiftly informed of all of the above restrictions, but regrettably they have taken no effective measures to the remedy.<\/p>\n
