Iran’s petrochemical industry needs up to 35 million cubic meters of gas per day, but the regime has only been able to deliver around 17 million cubic meters per day in recent weeks.<\/p>\n
Ministers have now asked the petrochemical industry to reduce production to minimum or even shut down their production lines until further notice – causing gas shortages.<\/p>\n
One petrochemical industry official told the state-run Mehr news agency: “Due to the reduction in gas supplies to petrochemical factories, the production of ammonia and methanol has reduced extensively, and in some cases been shut down since last month.”<\/p>\n
Iran has the second largest gas reserves in the world, and Mohamoud Ahmadinejad’s government spent 46 million dollars on the expansion of gas production.<\/p>\n
But is now unable to supply its own industry due to financial and technical problems, and is currently importing 22 million cubic meters of gas per day from its northern neighbour Turkmenistan.<\/p>\n
