{"id":16881,"date":"2014-07-23T18:25:06","date_gmt":"2014-07-23T17:25:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news1613067580\/news-sp-256\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/16881-us-house-votes-to-punish-banks-that-fund-hezbollah"},"modified":"2023-01-14T21:31:13","modified_gmt":"2023-01-14T20:31:13","slug":"us-house-votes-to-punish-banks-that-fund-hezbollah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/us-house-votes-to-punish-banks-that-fund-hezbollah\/","title":{"rendered":"US House votes to punish banks that fund Hezbollah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_41646\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41646\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caption alignleft size-full wp-image-41646\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/04\/nasrallah-khamenei-200.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"LEBANESE HEZBOLLAH LEADER KISSING HAND OF KHAMENEI\" title=\"LEBANESE HEZBOLLAH LEADER KISSING HAND OF KHAMENEI\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" style=\"margin: 5px 5px 5px 0px;float: left\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41646\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LEBANESE HEZBOLLAH LEADER KISSING HAND OF KHAMENEI<\/figcaption><\/figure>US lawmakers have voted to punish banks that help funnel money to Lebanese Hezbollah formed by the Iranian regime&#8217;s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) in 1982.<\/p>\n<p>The House of Representatives voted unanimously to broaden sanctions on the terrorist organization and &#8216;relentlessly pursue&#8217; domestic and foreign banks that do business with Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The bill also calls on President Barack Obama to label the group a transnational criminal organization, compelling the administration to take action to counter the group&#8217;s engagement in money laundering and trafficking in drugs and counterfeit goods.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate now needs to pass the legislation before President Obama signs it into law.<\/p>\n<p>House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Ed Royce said: &#8220;This bill builds on the existing sanctions regime by placing Hezbollah&#8217;s sources of financing under additional scrutiny, particularly those resources outside of Lebanon.&#8221;<br \/>The US sanctions would help reduce Hezbollah\u2019s global reach, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Royce added: &#8220;We must be focused on some 5,000 Hezbollah fighters in Syria, massive international drug and money laundering operations, and the terrorist organization\u2019s acquisition of advanced missile systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On July 10, the US Treasury blacklisted the Stars Group Holding, a Beirut-based network of companies accused of helping Hezbollah procure military equipment.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, the Treasury sanctioned the Lebanese Canadian Bank, accusing it of laundering hundreds of millions of dollars from a narcotics network.
