{"id":17002,"date":"2014-08-14T12:43:40","date_gmt":"2014-08-14T11:43:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news1613067580\/news-sp-256\/iran-a-world\/17002-us-rejects-maliki-s-attempt-to-cling-to-power"},"modified":"2023-01-15T09:32:33","modified_gmt":"2023-01-15T08:32:33","slug":"us-rejects-maliki-s-attempt-to-cling-to-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-a-world\/us-rejects-maliki-s-attempt-to-cling-to-power\/","title":{"rendered":"US rejects Maliki\u2019s attempt to cling to power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"iraq_baghdad_map\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-39777\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/04\/iraq_baghdad_map.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" style=\"float: left;margin: 5px\" \/>The Obama administration has chosen to ignore Maliki\u2019s assertions that he should still be prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>Marie Harf, Spokeswoman of the US Department of State, stated that the administration \u201cfirmly rejects any efforts to achieve outcomes via coercion or manipulation,\u201d a reference to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/no-to-nouri-al-maliki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maliki <\/a>who recently called off his loyalists who were moving to secure key infrastructure in Baghdad.<\/p>\n<p>Harf said: \u201cPrime minister-designate al-Abadi is moving forward as part of this process, and that\u2019s what we\u2019ll be focused on in the coming days,\u201d before adding \u201cWe\u2019ve seen these kinds of comments from the current prime minister before \u2026 [Iraq\u2019s] own democratic, constitutionally outlined process has been ongoing, and that\u2019s what happening right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other American officials, including the President and Vice President have supported the move and have asked prime minister-designate to form an inclusive government.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, deputy national security advisor Ben Rhodes stated: \u201cThe message to all of Iraq\u2019s leaders is there is a peaceful process in place to get a new government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the process that all Iraqis have to respect and frankly any efforts to derail that process, any efforts to use violence instead of working peacefully through the political process would be rejected not just by the United States, but by Iraqis themselves and the international community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rhodes added that the Americans want a \u201cpeaceful context\u201d in which the process of forming a new government in Iraq is conducted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur message to prime minister Maliki and to all Iraqi leaders is that this is the one process that is consistent with the Iraqi constitution that is going to lead to a new government and he needs to respect that process and let it go forward, because frankly this is not being imposed on anybody from outside of Iraq, this is what the Iraqis themselves have decided to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Prime Minister Maliki meanwhile has continued his attempt to cling on to power, saying the appointment of Abadi has \u201cno value.\u201d However, Maliki has lost support not only of those within his country, but his two biggest foreign supports, the United States and the Iranian regime, both of which now support Abadi\u2019s bid for power.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Obama administration has chosen to ignore Maliki&rsquo;s assertions that he should still be prime minister.
