\"ileana-ros-lehtinen\"<\/p>\n

NCRI – US Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen<\/a>, the chair of the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on the Middle East & North Africa, on Friday wrote to the State Department’s point man on Camp Liberty in relation to the food, fuel and logistical blockade imposed on the camp residents since Tuesday by the government of Iraq.<\/p>\n

The camp houses thousands of members of Iran’s main opposition group, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, PMOI<\/a> (or Mujahedin-e Khalq, MEK).<\/p>\n

While fuel is needed to run the camp\u2019s generators, the residents are suffering from the blockade<\/a>\u00a0in Iraq\u2019s scorching 50\u00b0C temperatures.<\/p>\n

In a letter to Jonathan Winer<\/a>, the State Department\u2019s Senior Advisor for Mujahedin-e Khalq Resettlement, Rep. Ros-Lehtinen wrote:<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to information my office has received, I would like to seek information regarding reports that the Iraqi National Security Advisor, Faleh Fayyad, has prevented food, fuel and septic trucks from entering Camp Liberty for several consecutive days this summer. As you know, the fasting month of Ramadan has just ended and temperatures can reach in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Denying the residents of Camp Liberty food and fuel under such conditions \u2014 and in fact, under any conditions \u2014 is cruel and inhumane.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf these reports are true, in accordance with all applicable rules and regulations, I urge the Department of State to press the Iraqi authorities to end this blockade and get the needed supplies to the Camp Liberty residents immediately. In addition, I also continue to ask the administration help protect and care for the residents of Camp Liberty and to press the Iraqi government to live up to its obligations to these residents.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you and I look forward to your prompt attention to this pressing matter.\u201d<\/p>\n
