Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) on Thursday said renewing existing sanctions set to expire next year will act as a bulwark against Tehran\u2019s ability to cheat on the deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt seems to me that if you want a deterrent, Iran has to know consequences,\u201d he told three members of Obama\u2019s Cabinet during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"bob-menendez-500\" class=\" size-full wp-image-43569\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/07\/bob-menendez-500.jpg\" alt=\"Sen. Bob Menendez\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/bob-menendez-500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/bob-menendez-500-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe it will never be called into play. That\u2019s fine, that\u2019s good \u2014 hopefully it won&#8217;t be called into play,\u201d he added. \u201cBut they need to know what the consequences are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to move to reauthorize them because I believe it should be part of the deterrence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Iran Sanctions Act, which was first enacted in 1996, aims to block the regime in Iran from building nuclear weapons as well as from financing extremist groups such as Hezbollah. Though many of those sanctions would be lifted under the terms of the international deal with the regime, Sen. Menendez said the law should be on the books so there is something to \u201csnap back\u201d to if Tehran breaks the deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t understand how we ultimately have a credible belief that snapback means something, if in fact you don&#8217;t have the ability to have those sanctions in place,\u201d said Sen.
