The United Kingdom should make any future economic relations with the regime in Iran conditional on \u201csubstantive and tangible\u201d improvements in the human rights situation in that country, Lord Carlile of Berriew wrote on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe alarming recent rise in executions in Iran, especially during the weeks following the nuclear deal between Iran and world’s six major powers, is a matter of great concern,\u201d Lord Carlile wrote in PoliticsHome<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to reliable reports from Iran, the regime’s authorities have carried out more than 60 executions, some of them through public hangings, in addition to barbaric punishments such as amputation of limbs<\/a>\u00a0and eye gouging<\/a>, in various Iranian cities since the nuclear deal was announced on 14 July 2015.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Iranian authorities are believed to have executed an astonishing 694 people between 1 January and 15 July 2015,\u201d Amnesty International said in a statement published<\/a>\u00a0on its website on July 23.<\/p>\n

Said Boumedouha, Deputy Director of the Amnesty International\u2019s Middle East and North Africa Programme, warned<\/a>: \u201cIf Iran\u2019s authorities maintain this horrifying execution rate we are likely to see more than 1,000 state-sanctioned deaths by the year\u2019s end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lord Carlile added: \u201cToday, many more are reported to be on death row, including juveniles<\/a>, facing immediate execution, sometimes for ambiguous and invented charges like \u2018Corruption on Earth\u2019 and \u2018Waging war against God\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne such case is the execution of juvenile offender Salar Shadizadi<\/a>, planned for August 10, who according to Amnesty International was jailed and sentenced to death for a crime committed when he was just 15 years old. The death sentence against Salar Shadizadi<\/a>\u00a0is a serious violation of the international human rights law that strictly prohibits the use of death penalty for crimes committed by persons under the age of 18.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother case causing shock and protests was highlighted by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights<\/a>\u00a0Zeid Ra\u2019ad Al Hussein on August 5, as he expressed alarm at the imposition of the death penalty on Mohammad Ali Taheri, an Iranian writer and founder of a spiritual movement. The U.S. State Department<\/a> has also expressed deep concern about the death sentence handed down to Mohammad Ali Taheri.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe International Community must strongly condemn the Iranian authorities\u2019 use of capital punishment as a political tool, designed to create an atmosphere of fear. UK can play a vital role in this regard and HM Government should join the international community in condemning and demanding a halt to the planned executions of Salar Shadizadi and Mohammad Ali Taheri.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFurthermore, the government should make any future economic relations between UK and Iran conditional on substantive and tangible improvements in the human rights situation in that country,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
