{"id":19021,"date":"2015-08-28T21:54:25","date_gmt":"2015-08-28T20:54:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news1613067580\/news-sp-256\/iran-a-world\/19021-an-economic-constriction-plan-to-restrain-iran-s-regime"},"modified":"2023-01-15T11:27:57","modified_gmt":"2023-01-15T10:27:57","slug":"an-economic-constriction-plan-to-restrain-iran-s-regime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-a-world\/an-economic-constriction-plan-to-restrain-iran-s-regime\/","title":{"rendered":"An economic constriction plan to restrain Iran&#8217;s regime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Iraq\" class=\" size-full wp-image-43865\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/08\/Iraq.jpg\" alt=\"Iraq\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An article published in the Washington Post by Juan Zarate and Chip Poncy\u00a0highlights that the U.S. needs to be fully aware of the risks surrounding the nuclear deal with the regime in Iran if it is adopted and warns: \u201cThese risks should not be accepted as an unavoidable cost of the deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One major risk is that the regime will end up with access to greater financial resources \u2013 billions of dollars \u2013 that will likely fund terrorist activities outside Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Another threat is the proliferation risk that will unlikely decrease because of the deal\u2019s \u201callowance for a nuclear infrastructure and research.\u201d What is almost certain to happen is that the proliferation threat will increase considering Iran\u2019s relationship with Syria and North Korea.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/using-financial-sticks-to-control-iran\/2015\/08\/27\/62e1c51a-4b36-11e5-bfb9-9736d04fc8e4_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">The article <\/a>also highlighted that the regime, with its newfound economic control, is unlikely to improve the human rights situation and will \u201cbrutally suppress internal opposition\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The writers of the article suggested that the U.S. must tackle Iran\u2019s \u201crogue activity\u201d with \u201cfinancial power\u201d. They said that an economic constriction campaign focusing on the regime\u2019s terrorist and nuclear involvement should be implemented.<\/p>\n<p>The economic constriction campaign should \u201ctighten export-control enforcement, interdictions and financial restrictions\u201d and should target the assets of anyone involved in extreme human-rights violations.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post article questioned whether this would be possible and stated that it \u201cshould be\u201d for the simple reason that it will preserve a \u201ckey element of U.S. leverage against Iran.\u201d If diplomats claim that this strategy would weaken the deal, it is clear that the U.S. will have lost the chance to use economic power to stave off the regime\u2019s rogue activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should not wait to find out \u2014 or to address the known risks from Iran that are already upon us.\u201d It is clear that the U.S. and the West need to keep their eyes open to the inevitable risks of dealing with a regime that would be unrestrained financially.<\/p>\n<p>Juan Zarate was the first-ever assistant treasury secretary for terrorist financing and financial crimes, deputy assistant to President George W. Bush and deputy national security adviser for combating terrorism.
