He said that after Rouhani came to power in 2013, more political prisoners had been jailed, conditions in prison worsened and the number of executions rose dramatically as the new regime sought to stave off the risk of a popular uprising fueled by increased access to outside information.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/iranian-dissidents-human-rights-worse-rouhani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">His interview with POLITICO<\/a>\u00a0comes three months after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/the-inside-story-of-obamas-path-to-yes-on-iran-netanhayu-israel-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">Western powers agreed<\/a>\u00a0to lift economic sanctions against Tehran progressively in exchange for its promise to limit nuclear activities. However, sanctions for human rights violations and support of terrorism remain in place, and evidence that Iran\u2019s record on either front is worsening could impede a full normalization of ties with the West, and raise criticism of the nuclear deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Rouhani was elected all furloughs for jailed former officials of the regime were canceled,\u201d said Madadzadeh, a member of the PMOI opposition group active inside Iran and among exiles in many countries. \u201cAccess to medical treatment outside of prison was called off completely. More people like teachers were arrested and imprisoned merely for demanding access to their welfare rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>POLITICO wrote: \u201cDuring his detention Madadzadeh said he was routinely beaten, blindfolded and pressured to incriminate himself for terrorist activities. He was also placed in solitary confinement for four months as part of an interrogation regimen that lasted 15 hours per day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen my father came to pick me up when I was released he came up to me and said, \u2018Sir, have you seen my son? His name is Farzad,\u201d he said. \u201cThe detention had changed me so much that my father was unable to recognize me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>POLITICO wrote that Madadzadeh\u2019s case gained prominence among Tehran opponents internationally, and was <a href=\"http:\/\/iran.usembassy.gov\/human-rights-report-on-iran-2011.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">mentioned publicly in State Department correspondence<\/a>. \u201cHe is starting speak publicly about his time in Iran now that he has arrived in Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmnesty International <a href=\"http:\/\/m.amnesty.fr\/Presse\/Communiques-de-presse\/Forte-hausse-des-executions-en-Iran-pres-de-700-condamnes-mis-mort-depuis-le-debut-de-annee-15709\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">said in July<\/a>\u00a0that more than 700 people had been put to death in Iran this year, a number that the United Nations has said was \u201cdeeply troubling\u201d, while thousands of people jailed for offenses ranging from drug abuse charges to political opposition were awaiting execution in \u2018death row\u2019 prison quarters,\u201d POLITICO wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe French Foreign Ministry <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diplomatie.gouv.fr\/fr\/dossiers-pays\/iran\/l-iran-et-les-droits-de-l-homme\/peine-de-mort-18316\/article\/iran-execution-de-l-iranienne?xtor=RSS-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">has condemned<\/a>\u00a0the execution of several Iranian prisoners including Reyhaneh Jabbari, a 26-year-old woman hanged for murdering a man she said tried to rape her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMadadzadeh, who is applying for political asylum in a European country that he did not want to specify, said that he was constantly told during his solitary confinement that he would be executed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Day 1, they tell you that you will be executed,\u201d he said. \u201cThat is part of their strategy to break you down so you will go in television and recant everything you ever believed in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another dissident, 18-year-old Paria Kohandel from Tehran, said she had left the country two months ago thanks to help from the PMOI network inside and outside Iran, POLITICO wrote. \u201cShe was not imprisoned, but frequently visited her father, Saleh Kohandel, a well-known political activist, in jail from the time she was 9 years old, and participated in demonstrations against the regime in 2009.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to these visits with my father, I was able to tell my friends about the behavior and action of the people in the regime,\u201d she said. \u201cMany young people have been seriously disappointed by these reports, which went against the image they had of Rouhani as being different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kohandel said her father, who remains in jail, had not told her to leave the country but left the choice up to her.
