{"id":19604,"date":"2015-12-09T19:33:15","date_gmt":"2015-12-09T19:33:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news1613067580\/news-sp-256\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/19604-bipartisan-agreement-iran-is-leading-state-sponsor-of-international-terrorism"},"modified":"2023-01-15T22:08:39","modified_gmt":"2023-01-15T21:08:39","slug":"bipartisan-agreement-iran-is-leading-state-sponsor-of-international-terrorism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-a-fundamentalism\/bipartisan-agreement-iran-is-leading-state-sponsor-of-international-terrorism\/","title":{"rendered":"Bipartisan Agreement: Iranian regime is Leading State Sponsor of International Terrorism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"engel-royce\" class=\" size-full wp-image-40275\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/08\/engel-royce.jpg\" alt=\"engel-royce\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(CNSNews.com) \u2013 The top Democrat and the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee both agreed that Iran is the leading state sponsor of terrorism around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Ranking member Eliot Engel (D-NY) pointed out during a committee<a href=\"http:\/\/foreignaffairs.house.gov\/hearing\/hearing-iran-s-islamic-revolutionary-guard-corps-fueling-middle-east-turmoil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">hearing<\/a> last week that Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been fueling turmoil throughout the Middle East even with strict economic sanctions in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran is the leading state sponsor of terrorism, and in the past several years when Iran had no money, it still found money to be the leading state sponsor of terrorism,\u201d Engel said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the [nuclear] deal negotiated with Iran, they will be awash in cash, they will have lots of money, and imagine how much destruction they can do in support of terrorist activities and terrorism. That is very deeply troubling for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The congressman went on to list a number of terrorist attacks since the 1970\u2019s in which Iran was involved.<br \/>\u201cSince seizing power in 1979, the Iranian regime has built an ugly record supporting terrorist proxies,\u201d Engel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s remember this: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/features\/general-article\/carter-hostage-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">seizure<\/a>\u00a0of our embassy in Tehran, 1979; the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/06\/13\/world\/meast\/beirut-marine-barracks-bombing-fast-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">bombings<\/a> of our embassy and a Marine barracks in Beirut in the early 80s, killing nearly 300 Americans; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/news\/article\/patrick-goodenough\/netanyahu-links-iran-s-new-president-terror-carnage-1990s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">attacks<\/a>\u00a0in Buenos Aires that targeted Israel\u2019s embassy and a Jewish community center; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/news\/article\/patrick-goodenough\/reported-arrest-khobar-towers-bombing-renews-focus-irans-anti-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">Khobar Towers bombing<\/a>\u00a0in Saudi Arabia, which also cost American lives; and just a few years ago, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/news\/article\/terror-plot-prompts-calls-crippling-pressure-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">plot to assassinate<\/a>\u00a0the Saudi ambassador, right here in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd every one of these horrible events is covered in Iran\u2019s fingerprints,\u201d Engel noted.<\/p>\n<p>Committee chairman Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA) was also highly critical of Iran\u2019s &#8220;support of international terrorism&#8221; and the actions of the IRGC, which he said has turned Iran into a \u201cglobal menace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last few weeks, the IRGC has tested a new long-range ballistic missile, and that test is in violation of the U.N. sanctions. They also released a video of dozens more of these ICBMs staged in an underground bunker,\u201d Royce said in his opening statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe IRGC\u2019s Quds force has stepped up efforts in support of the murderous Assad regime in Syria, and we\u2019ve seen those attacks on the ground. And by all accounts it appears that the IRGC has prevented international investigators from accessing the information needed to conclusively finish a report on the possible military dimensions of Iran\u2019s nuclear program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom nuclear proliferation to support of international terrorism to human rights abuses, the IRGC has made Iran the global menace that Iran is today,&#8221; Royce said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe IRGC is responsible for squashing democracy movements at home, for spreading the Iranian regime\u2019s revolutionary ideology abroad, and for sparking turmoil throughout the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Its forces operate, again, independent of Iran\u2019s regular army.
