Ed Royce: U.S. interests are with Iran\u2019s people, not the theocracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"ed-royce-400-3\" class=\" size-full wp-image-45498\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/ed-royce-400-3.jpg\" alt=\"ed-royce-400-3\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ed-royce-400-3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ed-royce-400-3-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Congressman Ed Royce, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the United States House of Representatives, has said the Obama Administration essentially robbed the Iranian people of their chance at freedom from the oppressive theocratic regime, citing a missed opportunity during the Islamic Republic\u2019s 2009 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe blunder committed by the [Obama] administration with Iran was that we did not embrace the people of Iran at the time the election was stolen. Instead, the outreach was to the Ayatollah,\u201d Rep. Royce<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2016\/03\/17\/ed-royce-iran-revolution-missiles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\"> told Breitbart News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the U.S.\u2019s interests are with empowering the people of Iran, instead of the theocratic regime that governs them with an iron fist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States at that time \u2014 our government, our State Department, every free agency \u2014 should have been reaching out and should have been assisting those who had gone to the streets because the election had been stolen from them. And we should have been building from that point on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Royce cited an exchange program in which he participated in 1985 in Eastern Europe, where radio broadcast systems were used to reach the masses and provide them with information banned from their regime, and which wound up boosting oppositional support up by 20 percent in a matter of weeks. He suggested the same be done in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could see the way the information was awakening people\u2019s understanding of what that totalitarian regime was telling them. And today in Iran, you have a theocratic regime telling people propaganda which two-thirds of the people don\u2019t believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Royce pointed out that polling indicates 66 percent of Iran\u2019s population is eager for \u201ca Western-style democracy without a theocracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iran&#8217;s regime has twice violated UN Security Council resolutions in recent weeks by firing off intercontinental ballistic missiles. Rep. Royce noted that during the time the now-historic Iran deal \u2014 the Joint-Comprehension Plan of Action (JCPOA) \u2014 was being negotiated, U.S. negotiator Wendy Sherman \u201csaid categorically that control over the ICBM program [and] ballistic missiles would be part of the agreement. The president himself gave those assurances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that the talking points on the floor of the House of Representatives also included reference to the fact that Tehran would be held accountable. However, the Obama administration has not begun to enforce any consequences for the Iranian regime\u2019s clear violations.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Royce expressed deep concern over the writing on the side of those Iranian missiles: \u201cWords to the effect of \u2018Israel does not have the right to exist,\u2019 or \u2018will cease to exist.\u2019 And what also concerns me is that the chants of \u2018Death to America,\u2019 \u2018Death to Israel\u2019 are still being made by the Ayatollah.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, Rep. Royce said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The bottom line is that America needs to understand that our interests are with the people of Iran, not a theocracy. Our interest is to see the people of Iran empowered.
