{"id":20148,"date":"2016-04-09T15:32:16","date_gmt":"2016-04-09T14:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/issues\/human-rights\/20148-iran-regime-executes-man-despite-appeal-by-rights-group"},"modified":"2023-01-16T03:47:17","modified_gmt":"2023-01-16T02:47:17","slug":"iran-regime-executes-man-despite-appeal-by-rights-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/iran-regime-executes-man-despite-appeal-by-rights-group\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran regime executes man despite appeal by rights group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Rashid-Kouhi-400\" class=\" size-full wp-image-45629\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/04\/Rashid-Kouhi-400.jpg\" alt=\"Rashid-Kouhi-400\" width=\"400\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Rashid-Kouhi-400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Rashid-Kouhi-400-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>NCRI &#8211; Iran&#8217;s fundamentalist regime on Saturday executed student Rashid Kouhi despite an appeal by Amnesty International for the sentence to be halted.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Kouhi, 36, was executed earlier in the day on Saturday in Rasht\u2019s Lakan Prison in Gilan Province, northern Iran, sources said.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday Amnesty International said Mr. Kouhi&#8217;s scheduled execution demonstrated the Iranian authorities\u2019 utter disregard for the right to life and their determination to continue with a staggering execution spree that saw nearly 1000 people put to death last year.<\/p>\n<p>Family members of Rashid Kouhi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/20141-amnesty-iranian-man-to-be-imminently-executed-denied-the-right-to-appeal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">received a call<\/a>\u00a0from prison authorities on Thursday informing them that they should go to Lakan Prison to have a final meeting with him on Friday before his execution the following day.<\/p>\n<p>Rashid Kouhi was arrested at a checkpoint in Roudbar, Gilan province on August 24, 2011.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The officers who stopped him conducted a search of his bag where they found 800 grams of crystal meth. He was a student at the time. He was tried and sentenced to death following a grossly unfair trial by a Revolutionary Court in Roudbar in February 2012,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2016\/04\/iranian-man-facing-imminent-execution-tomorrow-denied-the-right-to-appeal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a>\u00a0to Amnesty International.<\/p>\n<p>Said Boumedouha, Amnesty International\u2019s Middle East and North Africa Deputy Director, said on Friday: \u201cThe imminent execution of Rashid Kouhi days after Iran was revealed to be the world\u2019s second highest executioner in 2015 in Amnesty International\u2019s annual death penalty report, highlights the authorities\u2019 determination to maintain their horrifying rate of executions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Iranian authorities must halt the execution of Rashid Kouhi immediately. The use of the death penalty for drug-related offences is a blatant violation of international human rights law. Instead of stepping up their rampant execution spree the Iranian authorities must take steps to abolish this ultimate cruel and inhuman punishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The human rights groups said: &#8220;The court\u2019s verdict, which has been reviewed by Amnesty International, is less than a page long and does not contain adequate reasoning. He did not have access to a lawyer during questioning and met a state appointed lawyer for the first time during his trial. He was held in Roudbar for two years before being taken to Lakan Prison in Rasht.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rashid Kouhi was denied the right to appeal his death sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is appalling that Rashid Kouhi has been denied the right to an appeal which is a fundamental element of the right to a fair trial. The Iranian authorities must urgently halt his execution and give him a chance to appeal his death sentence in a fair trial without recourse to the death penalty.
